You will design and deliver highly available, low-latency backend systems that support reliable user experiences at scale. Working within a collaborative engineering environment, you will take ownership of significant technical initiatives, guide projects from planning through implementation, and make architectural decisions that balance performance, reliability, and maintainability. You will partner closely with product managers, designers, analytics specialists, and fellow engineers to solve complex problems and deliver meaningful business outcomes. This role offers opportunities to influence engineering standards, improve operational excellence, and mentor teammates while contributing to a distributed, global engineering organization. Join a remote-first team that values technical ownership, continuous learning, and the development of transparent, dependable digital experiences.
Accountabilities:
- Design, develop, deploy, and maintain scalable backend systems supporting customer onboarding, identity verification, and authentication across multiple product experiences.
- Own and deliver quarterly team objectives, translating business priorities into clear technical plans and actionable engineering initiatives.
- Lead engineers through complex and ambiguous technical challenges, ensuring projects progress effectively while providing guidance and support throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Architect and implement highly available, low-latency distributed systems that meet demanding reliability, performance, and scalability requirements.
- Collaborate with product management, design, analytics, and engineering stakeholders to shape product ideas, communicate technical constraints, and make informed decisions based on business priorities, risks, and trade-offs.
- Define technical approaches for significant features and system components, emphasizing simplicity, extensibility, maintainability, and high-quality implementation.
- Identify and address technical debt, operational challenges, process inefficiencies, and emerging business or technology risks, driving improvements proactively.
- Monitor service health and system performance by establishing relevant metrics, reviewing operational indicators, escalating issues when necessary, and supporting on-call responsibilities.
- Strengthen engineering quality by establishing and improving code review practices, design standards, testing strategies, and development workflows.
- Promote engineering best practices beyond the immediate team through technical documentation, written communication, knowledge sharing, and technical presentations.
- Mentor and support fellow engineers through constructive feedback, technical guidance, and leading by example.
- Contribute to a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development by actively seeking feedback and helping teammates grow.
- Safely implement substantial changes across large codebases by applying effective development tools, testing practices, and deployment safeguards.

- Demonstrated experience building and operating highly available distributed systems using technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
- Strong software design and architectural skills, with the ability to develop technical plans for significant features and system components using simple, extensible, and maintainable approaches.
- Proven ability to write clean, reliable, well-tested code that is easy for other engineers to understand, maintain, and extend.
- Experience making significant changes to large codebases while maintaining system stability through effective testing, tooling, code review, and deployment practices.
- Solid understanding of backend engineering principles, distributed system reliability, service availability, performance optimization, and production operations.
- Ability to take ownership of technical initiatives, establish priorities, navigate ambiguity, and deliver projects independently while supporting team objectives.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify technical and operational issues proactively and develop effective solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and distributed engineering organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional growth, including proactively seeking feedback from peers, managers, and stakeholders and applying it to improve performance.
- Strong mentoring and collaboration skills, with the ability to contribute to engineering standards, support teammates, and promote a culture of quality and accountability.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote-first environment while maintaining clear communication, ownership, and alignment with team priorities.
