Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Description

Ohme is on a mission to accelerate the global transition to clean, affordable energy. We do that by serving as an integrated hardware and software smart-grid platform, focused on the residential EV charging market.

The worlds of energy, transport and artificial intelligence are colliding and Ohme is at the heart of this new era. By using technology and data integrations to connect cars, chargers, people, energy providers and more, Ohme has a powerful platform that puts the consumer at the core.

Ohme has been selling its chargers to consumers since mid 2019 and has had exponential growth since. We are now operating in multiple countries and have partnerships with the likes of VW Group, Hyundai, Volvo, Octopus Energy, and other innovative brands.

We are scaling up the business and are building out the team for rapid growth. If you’re interested joining a fast-growing cleantech venture on a data and AI-first journey to speed up the global transition to clean, affordable energy, read on!

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to join our Purchase and Fulfilment team. This team owns the customer purchase journey: from the moment a lead is created, through eligibility and home surveys, to the point the customer is handed off to an installer partner with all the data needed to fit their charger.

This is a hands-on engineering role. You will spend your time building and operating services, not delegating. We are mid-way through breaking a legacy Kotlin monolith into domain-driven, event-driven services, and you will take real ownership of that work as we open up new markets and partners. Reporting to the Software Team Lead, you will be a senior voice others learn from.

What you’ll do
  • Build and own backend services: Design, build and operate Kotlin services across our purchase journey services (surveys, the journey API, lead handling and the survey builder framework), from design through to production.
  • Drive the migration: Help carve the legacy monolith into smaller Spring Boot services with clear domain boundaries, an event-driven architecture and well thought out observability.
  • Power the journey and partner portals: Build the APIs and events that move customer data between surveys, CRM, our customer management system and our installer and partner portals, so journeys convert and hand off cleanly.
  • Build with AI: Use AI tools responsibly to raise the quality and pace of your work, and apply AI where it genuinely improves how we design, build and test.
  • Raise the bar: Lead through code reviews, architecture input and pragmatic technical decisions, setting standards others follow.
  • Keep it healthy: Own reliability, observability and incident response for your services, keeping them secure, cost-efficient and operationally sound.

Who you are
Live our values: Customer Obsessed, Collaboration, Progressive, Brave, Do Good. Be a team player with creative opinions, focused on driving solutions. Always look forward and learn from mistakes.
  • Hands-on by choice: You are a practising engineer who wants to build, not a manager who delegates the technical work away.
  • Quality-driven: You care about the craft. Testing, observability and sound architecture matter to you, not as afterthoughts.
  • Pragmatic: You make sensible trade-offs in a monolith-to-services migration and ship reliably without waiting for perfect conditions.
  • Pragmatic about AI: You know where AI tools add real value in an engineering workflow and where they do not.
  • Collaborative: You work well with product, design, QA and stakeholders across the business, and you explain technical trade-offs clearly.
  • Curious: You stay close to why you are building something, including the customer journey and the commercial outcomes behind it.

What you’ll need
  • Backend experience: Proven professional experience (5 years and over) building and operating production backend services, ideally in Kotlin or another JVM language with a strong willingness to work in Kotlin.
  • Spring and services: Strong experience with Spring Boot / Spring Cloud and building domain-driven or microservice architectures.
  • Event-driven systems: Hands-on experience with event-driven patterns and messaging (we use Kafka).
  • Data and storage: Solid experience with relational and non-relational stores (we use Postgres, DynamoDB and Redis).
  • Cloud-native delivery: Comfortable shipping on AWS with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD (we use AWS CDK, GitHub Actions, DataDog and Sentry).
  • An interest in the mission: Clean energy, EVs or the energy transition is a genuine draw for you.

Benefits
You’ll get to work in a fast-paced and rapidly growing scale-up with global ambitions that is cutting edge, passionate about sustainability and seeks to make the world a better place. Our benefits:

  • Competitive salary and bonus
  • London Office - 3 days a week in the office
