Senior Software Engineer
We are looking for an experienced software engineer who is ready to take ownership of a growing engineering team. This is a hands‑on leadership role, combining software development with day‑to‑day technical leadership, mentoring and delivery management.
Initially you will remain an active contributor, designing and building software alongside the team while providing technical direction, coaching engineers and ensuring work is delivered to a high standard. As the engineering function grows, the role will naturally evolve towards greater people leadership and delivery ownership.
You will work closely with the CTO and product stakeholders to translate business priorities into high quality software, helping establish engineering processes, technical standards and a culture of continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead the design and implementation of new platform capabilities.
- Maintain high standards of software quality, security and maintainability.
- Review architecture and technical designs.
- Drive improvements to engineering practices and development workflows.
- Champion automation, testing and modern software engineering practices.
- Support production issues and lead technical investigations where required.
Team Leadership
- Provide day‑to‑day leadership for the engineering team.
- Mentor and coach software engineers through regular one‑to‑ones and code reviews.
- Support recruitment, onboarding and development of new engineers.
- Help build a collaborative, accountable and high‑performing engineering culture.
- Identify capability gaps and recommend hiring plans as the team grows.
Delivery
- Break business objectives into achievable technical work.
- Plan and coordinate sprint activities.
- Monitor delivery progress and remove blockers.
- Work closely with Product and the Fractional CTO to ensure priorities are understood and delivered.
- Ensure engineering estimates and commitments remain realistic.
Quality & Operations
- Ensure software is well tested before release.
- Promote observability, monitoring and operational excellence.
- Encourage continuous improvement through retrospectives and metrics.
- Help maintain secure development practices and compliance with company standards.
Required Experience
- 7+ years of commercial software engineering experience.
- Previous experience leading or mentoring engineers.
- Strong experience building and maintaining production SaaS applications.
- Excellent understanding of software architecture and design patterns.
- Experience with cloud‑native application development.
- Strong understanding of APIs, distributed systems and integrations.
- Comfortable balancing technical excellence with pragmatic delivery.
Technical Skills
We recognise great engineers can learn new technologies quickly, however experience in several of the following would be advantageous:
- .NET / C#
- JavaScript or TypeScript
- React
- SQL and relational databases
- REST APIs
- Cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
- CI/CD pipelines
- Git
- Docker and containerisation
- Automated testing
Leadership Qualities
You will:
- Lead by example.
- Be comfortable making decisions with incomplete information.
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Coach rather than command.
- Care about delivering business outcomes, not simply writing code.
- Hold yourself and others accountable while maintaining a supportive environment.
- Take ownership of problems through to resolution.
Success Measures
Within the first 12 months you will have:
- Become the day‑to‑day technical leader for the engineering team.
- Improved engineering quality and consistency.
- Established effective development standards and ways of working.
- Reduced delivery bottlenecks.
- Helped grow a strong engineering culture.
- Built trust with product, leadership and engineering stakeholders.
