Senior Software Engineer - Conversational AI
Summary
Senior engineer building scalable backend services and real-time AI-driven conversational systems using Python/TypeScript, cloud-native architecture, and WebRTC/SIP integrations.
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer - Conversational AI based in United States.
This is a senior engineering opportunity focused on building production-grade software that powers conversational AI and digital customer experiences. You will develop core platform capabilities, backend services, and user-facing functionality supporting AI-driven customer interactions across digital and voice channels. The role combines distributed systems engineering, real-time communications, cloud-native architecture, and AI-enabled development. You will work closely with Product, Design, QA, and engineering teams from initial planning through production support. Success in this role means delivering secure, scalable, observable, and low-latency systems that improve customer experiences at scale. You will also contribute to engineering standards, mentor peers, and help shape the technical direction of an evolving AI platform. This is a fully remote role within the United States.
Accountabilities
- Build and evolve AI platform capabilities: Develop and support core platform functionality, backend services, integrations, and user-facing experiences that enable reliable conversational AI and digital customer journeys.
- Design scalable backend systems: Architect and implement event-driven, integration-heavy services, including asynchronous pipelines, APIs, microservices, and reliable delivery patterns for downstream systems and notifications.
- Engineer for reliability and performance: Own production-grade behavior, proactively troubleshoot distributed systems, handle edge cases and failure scenarios, and improve application performance, scalability, and data integrity.
- Develop secure integrations: Build robust integrations with REST APIs, webhooks, third-party services, and other systems while applying strong validation, security, privacy, and compliance practices.
- Support real-time communications: Contribute to real-time multimedia and voice capabilities using technologies and protocols such as SIP, RTP/SRTP, WebRTC, and WebSockets, with LiveKit experience considered advantageous.
- Optimize data and infrastructure: Apply effective database design, query and index optimization, cloud-native architecture, observability, and cost-conscious engineering practices to production workloads.
- Drive projects cross-functionally: Partner with Product, QA, Design, and other engineering teams to translate requirements into high-quality solutions, manage roadmap initiatives, and resolve high-severity production issues.
- Raise engineering standards: Participate in code reviews, establish maintainable engineering patterns, improve observability and integration design, and mentor teammates on technical practices.
- Apply AI-assisted development: Use modern AI coding agents and development tools effectively to accelerate delivery while maintaining reliability, quality, security, and maintainability.
- Professional experience: 3+ years of professional experience as a Backend Software Engineer, or as a Full Stack Engineer with a strong backend focus, ideally using Python and/or TypeScript.
- Distributed systems: 3+ years of experience designing and building scalable APIs, microservices, distributed systems, or comparable production services.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Software engineering: Strong ability to write clean, extensible, maintainable, and traceable code using clear boundaries and well-designed abstractions.
- Backend expertise: Strong understanding of backend development, asynchronous programming, concurrency, scalable services, and integration-heavy architectures.
- API and integration experience: Hands-on experience with REST APIs, webhooks, third-party integrations, failure handling, and complex edge cases.
- Computer science fundamentals: Solid knowledge of data structures, algorithms, software design, and their practical application to production systems.
- Cloud and operations: Familiarity with cloud-native architecture, reliability and scalability patterns, observability tools, and the use of logs, metrics, and traces to diagnose production issues.
- Real-time technologies: Experience with real-time multimedia or telephony/VoIP architectures and protocols such as SIP, RTP/SRTP, WebRTC, or WebSockets is highly relevant.
- AI and modern development: Familiarity with AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar tools, and an ability to use them responsibly to build reliable software.
- Problem-solving and ownership: Strong debugging skills, productive autonomy, sound technical judgment, and the ability to balance delivery speed, quality, reliability, and cost under pressure.
- Collaboration and mindset: Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with an ethical, user-first approach and an open, inclusive mindset.
