Senior Software Engineer, Python / AWS
We are partnering with an established global data and technology business to find a Senior Software Engineer to join its growing engineering team in North Sydney.
This is a highly hands-on role for a strong Python and AWS engineer who wants genuine ownership across the full software development lifecycle. You will work across solution design, development, APIs, data platforms, cloud infrastructure and production support, contributing to systems that process large volumes of data and support enterprise customers globally.
This is not a role where you simply pick up tickets and hand your code over. You will be expected to understand the problem, contribute to the design, build the solution, take it through to production and continue to own and improve it.

The team is lean, so engineers have broad responsibility and are expected to take genuine ownership of what they build. They are looking for someone who is proactive, dependable, comfortable challenging ideas constructively and willing to step outside a narrowly defined job description when the team needs it.
Communication is particularly important. While this is not heavily client-facing, the role does involve production and second-level application support, so you need to be able to understand an issue, communicate clearly and consider the impact from the customer's perspective.

What you’ll be doing
- Design, build and enhance production-grade applications and services using Python
- Develop and enhance APIs within an AWS cloud environment
- Contribute to solution architecture and technical design decisions
- Work across AWS services including areas such as Lambda, API Gateway, Aurora, Redshift and OpenSearch
- Build integrations between applications, APIs, databases and data platforms
- Work with large-scale, multi-source datasets and data-driven applications
- Take ownership from initial problem definition through to production deployment
- Identify opportunities to re-engineer and improve existing systems for scalability, performance and reliability
- Own production systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response and root cause analysis
- Provide second-level technical support for applications and production issues
- Contribute to CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews and engineering standards
- Work closely with product, engineering and broader business stakeholders to translate business problems into technical solutions.
You’ll ideally bring:
- Strong commercial experience developing software in Python
- Strong hands-on AWS experience
- Experience designing, developing and supporting production APIs
- Experience with Python frameworks such as FastAPI or similar
- Strong backend software engineering fundamentals
- Experience working with relational databases and data-intensive applications
- Confidence contributing to system design and architecture
- Experience owning applications through the full development lifecycle
- Strong troubleshooting and production support capability
- Experience with CI/CD, testing and modern engineering practices
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience with Snowflake is advantageous but not essential. Exact exposure to every AWS service in the current environment is also not required. They are more interested in genuine AWS depth and your ability to learn new services quickly.
