Senior Software Engineer - Data & AI (all genders)
We pioneered the Organic SolidFlow battery
CMBlu Energy is on an exciting journey towards becoming a global cleantech company. Our mission is to enable unlimited energy storage modelled on nature - for everyone, worldwide.
What are SolidFlow batteries?
SolidFlow batteries store energy in organic molecules. The absence of explosive materials makes them safe, the use of socially and ecologically conflict-free raw materials makes them sustainable and the almost unlimited availability of materials makes them scalable and cheap to procure. This makes our patented SolidFlow technology a game changer in the development of a global climate-neutral energy system.
From start-up to scale-up: we're tackling it together
CMBlu Energy is developing from a start-up focussing on research into a manufacturing scale-up that is on its way to series production. Around 240 employees are working towards this goal at CMBlu Energy. Our head office is in Alzenau near Frankfurt, with a branch office in Obernburg. There are also subsidiaries in Athens, Greece and Petaluma, USA.
Your Mission
Do you want to build the software, data pipelines and AI that make battery research faster? With us, you'll develop the systems that turn our research, pilot and production data into better materials and cells – and the AI tools our chemistry and electrochemistry teams work with every day.
You're strong in software development, have a feel for data and a real appetite for AI in its full breadth – from LLMs and agents to classical machine learning. You combine clean engineering with Databricks, Azure and Claude to build tools that don't exist off the shelf.
That way you give our research not just data, but answers – and the leverage to make the right decisions faster.
Your Responsibilities
- Build production-grade software – APIs, services and internal web apps in modern Python (uv, FastAPI/uvicorn), with clean architecture, tests and CI/CD; for example analysis apps that let researchers evaluate their test data, deployed as Databricks Apps via Asset Bundles and GitLab.
- Develop AI applications for research – assistants and agents that support R&D with tasks like research, hypothesis generation, material selection and synthesis planning. You combine LLMs and agents (incl. Claude via MCP) with scientific methods such as cheminformatics, retrosynthesis and quantum chemistry – and keep pushing these tools forward.
- Think AI broadly – not just LLMs – apply classical machine learning where it's the better tool: modelling material-to-performance relationships, spotting data-quality issues and anomalies, predicting lifetime and degradation.
- Build and run scalable data pipelines and our data platform – following the Bronze/Silver/Gold pattern on Databricks and Azure, from sensor ingestion (MQTT, Event Hubs, Lakeflow) to the gold tables our teams work with directly.
- Own your systems end-to-end – from data source through model or agent to the tool in a researcher's hands, including security, observability, quality and reliability.
- Work closely with chemistry, electrochemistry, engineering and testing and translate scientific questions into software and AI solutions.
Your Profile
- You're a strong software engineer first – several years building production software, with a feel for architecture, clean code, testing and CI/CD (ideally GitLab).
- You're highly proficient in Python (and SQL) and at home designing APIs, services and microservices.
- You have solid data engineering experience – Databricks and PySpark, the medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold), batch and streaming pipelines, and the Azure data stack (Data Factory, ADLS Gen2, Event Hubs).
- You have a genuine affinity for AI across its full breadth – hands-on with LLMs and generative AI (RAG, agents, MCP, tools like Claude) and a solid grasp of classical machine learning – and you know when to use which.
- You want to work at the intersection of software, data, AI and science and bring the curiosity to dig into our domain – batteries, chemistry, electrochemistry.
- Fluent English; German is a plus.
