Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack
Summary
Senior Full Stack Engineer building and shipping features on advisor-facing platforms (Suncentral, Advisor Hub) using Java/Spring Boot back-ends and React/TypeScript front-ends in an agile, enterprise insurance environment.
- Design, build, and ship full-stack features on Suncentral and Advisor Hub from refinement through production
- Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code integrating with back-end services and front-end surfaces
- Contribute to technical discussions with the Tech Lead on approaches, trade-offs, and implementation options
- Modernize legacy application components with current, maintainable solutions
- Collaborate with Journey Owners, Scrum Masters, and Tech Leads to estimate work, flag risks, and deliver sprint commitments
- Analyze downstream impacts of changes on infrastructure and system behaviour
- Support less experienced team members through code reviews and informal pairing as capacity allows
- Participate in agile ceremonies and continuous team improvement
Requirements
- 5+ years of progressive full-stack development experience, including full SDLC and systems integration
- Strong Java / Spring / Spring Boot
- API development proficiency: REST, OpenAPI, AJAX, SOAP; middleware and web hosting technologies
- Front-end fluency in React and React Router, including component lifecycle, hooks, state management, SPA architecture, async rendering, and client-side routing
- Strong JavaScript / TypeScript, including ES6+ features such as async/await, promises, destructuring, modules, and arrow functions
- Solid HTML5 and CSS3; responsive design principles
- SQL expertise across relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle) and NoSQL (MongoDB)
- Hands-on experience with DevOps tooling: BitBucket, CDD, Jenkins
- Self-directed, able to ramp up quickly, take ownership, and deliver within fixed timeframes
- Clear communicator who surfaces defects with reproducible steps and root-cause insight
- Technically credible, with strong code, review, and problem-solving abilitiesCollaborative and able to champion engineering best practices
- Familiarity with C# / ASP.net is an asset
- Experience in financial services or insurance technology is nice to have
- Familiarity with Suncentral, Advisor Hub, or similar advisor-facing platforms is nice to have
- Experience in large-scale enterprise environments with compliance and audit requirements is nice to have
- Occasional travel between Sun Life locations in Toronto and Waterloo may be required
- Periodic weekend/after-hours work may be required for project implementations and system upgrades
