Who We Are & What We Do
Your Career Path & Development
- AI-Native Engineering: We've standardized on a strong, well-integrated set of agentic coding tools, so you spend your time directing agents that plan, write, and test code rather than evaluating a dozen options yourself.
- Continuous Learning: Sharpen your skills with full access to the entire Udemy learning database.
- Internal Mentorship: Learn from experts across our global team through tech demos, pair programming, and collaborative projects.
- Clear Advancement: We provide a framework for you to grow from one role to the next, with clear expectations and support from your manager.
- Travel: Opportunities to travel to the US for collaboration with our global teams.
What is special about these roles?
- Experience (Patient & Provider) - Builds the product experiences that connect patients, health systems, and healthcare providers to genomic insights. The Patient team (PHP) owns the HRN enrollment flow, results delivery, and accessioning integrations. The Provider team (PRO) simplifies the ordering, management, and billing of clinical genetic tests.
- Lab Systems (LABS) - Owns the laboratory-facing services that keeps Helix’s sequencing & supply chain operations running. You’ll build and maintain scalable platforms and fullstack software that support the lab and integrates with analysis pipelines: lab workflows, instrument automations, sample accessioning, inventory management and distribution.
- Data, Operations & Governance (DOG) - A newly consolidated team owning how Helix accesses, governs, and models its operational data and services. Builds and maintains the pipelines, infrastructure, and data models that generate strategic insights across the organization. Products include the Ops Data Model (HODM), analytics database (HODOR), core data services (master patient index, token generation, deletion orchestration), and observability tooling.
- Genomics Platform (GENP) - Builds the infrastructure, pipelines, and applications that process terabytes of genomic data weekly. Supports exome sequencing, confirmation testing, bioinformatics QC, and return-of-results workflows.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will:
- Lead projects from scoping through implementation to successful outcomes — not just output, but real impact for the business and users.
- Delegate implementation to AI agents with precise, unambiguous instructions, then critically evaluate output for correctness and production-readiness using evals and other quality checks, maintaining audit-ready compliance throughout.
- Explore and champion new AI tools, frameworks, and workflows, including orchestrating multiple AI agents across a pipeline; document pros/cons, best practices, and pitfalls; and create reusable prompt templates or context frameworks that elevate the entire team's AI fluency.
- Design and implement software systems for Helix's products and services, delivering well-tested, performant, and reliable solutions that consider the full lifecycle of a project (including on-call).
- Take ownership of services and significant areas of the codebase, developing deep domain expertise and serving as a go-to technical resource for your team.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, user experience researchers, scientists, and business leaders to drive meaningful outcomes.
- Proactively identify and address technical debt before it becomes a long-term problem, and encourage and enable your team to do the same.
- Mentor engineers within your team and contribute to improving engineering practices, with growing influence beyond your immediate team.
- Contribute to setting technical standards and participate in decision-making that affects teams beyond your direct sphere of influence.
About you:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- 7+ years of equivalent professional experience as a Software Engineer.
- Proficiency with distributed systems built on cloud infrastructure - AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar.
- Strong engineering expertise with proficiency in an established language - backend (Go, Java, Python, Scala, Rust) or full-stack (TypeScript/React + a backend language)
- Daily, hands-on use of AI coding harnesses as a core part of your development workflow.
- Demonstrated ability to delegate implementation work to AI agents. This means decomposing problems, writing clear and precise instructions, and iterating on prompts to get production-quality results.
- Solid understanding of software engineering best practices including testing, code review, CI/CD, and observability.
- Demonstrated ability to take a nebulous project, scope it, determine a solution and course of action, and implement and launch it with minimal external guidance.
- A strong product engineering mindset with a clear focus on customer and business outcomes.
- Experience mentoring other engineers and a track record of elevating the practices of those around you.
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tooling/frameworks (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK).
- Familiarity with database design, data manipulation, and data quality techniques.
- Adaptable in a fast-paced startup environment where priorities may change quickly and frequently.
- Demonstrated willingness to learn new domains (e.g., genomics, healthcare) and associated technologies.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
Pluses:
- Familiarity with regulated software systems in any industry (e.g., HIPAA, ISO, FDA).
- Familiarity and experience developing and architecting event-driven architectures.
- Experience with AWS technologies and serverless infrastructure.
- Experience in the life sciences/pharmaceutical industry.
