Senior Software Engineer (Hybrid)

Job Summary

Senior Software Engineer, Embedded Software (Life Cycle Engineering)

Insulet is seeking a collaborative and adaptable Senior Software Engineer to support the development and maintenance of embedded software for medical devices. This role is responsible for the full software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate has strong C/C++ programming skills, hands-on embedded systems experience, and a proven ability to solve complex technical challenges while collaborating across Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Engineering teams. This position requires both technical leadership and a team-oriented mindset, with a focus on delivering high-quality, reliable software solutions in a regulated medical device environment.

We are looking for a collaborative, adaptable Senior Software Engineer to join the Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) team supporting Insulet's embedded software for medical products. This role contributes across the full software lifecycle—including design, implementation, testing, documentation, maintenance, and continuous improvement—in a regulated, multidisciplinary environment.

Success in this role means taking ownership of the work needed by the team, whether that involves new feature development, defect resolution, design documentation, test support, or cross-functional integration. We value engineers who communicate openly, bring positive energy to the team, and approach every assignment as an opportunity to strengthen the product and help teammates succeed.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, document, and maintain embedded software for new and existing Insulet products.
  • Own assigned work end-to-end—including implementation, debugging, documentation, and verification—with a strong commitment to quality, completeness, and successful delivery.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software and system issues spanning multiple components, disciplines, or product generations.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to evaluate technical tradeoffs, investigate root causes, and drive issues to resolution with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure software designs and development activities comply with company policies and applicable regulatory requirements for medical devices.
  • Create and maintain design documentation, requirements, and test artifacts as a routine part of engineering work.
  • Partner with Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, Manufacturing, and other cross-functional teams to ensure solutions meet technical, regulatory, and business requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with software, software quality, and hardware engineers to integrate, debug, and test system functionality.
  • Participate constructively in design reviews, code reviews, and team planning; share knowledge and help teammates succeed.
  • Adapt to changing team and product priorities by contributing across development, maintenance, and support activities as needed.
  • Provide technical leadership when appropriate, helping guide design decisions, mentor team members, and drive technical excellence.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education and Experience:
Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and 7+ years of relevant work experience; or a master's degree in related field and 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong programming skills in C and/or C++.
  • Hands-on experience with Embedded Systems.
  • Experience developing embedded software for ARM, TI, MSP, or similar microcontroller-based systems is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively on a shared codebase and collaborate with internal and external team members.
  • Willingness to lead technically when needed — mentoring, reviewing, or guiding an area of the design — while remaining hands-on and team-oriented.

Preferred Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience developing software for embedded microcontrollers.
  • Knowledge of I2C, SPI, Flash, EEPROM and/or USB.
  • Familiarity with communication systems and/or wireless protocols (BLE a plus).
  • Medical device or other regulated-industry experience.
  • Knowledge of OS concepts (threading, mutual exclusion, interrupts, deadlock avoidance).
  • Understanding of RTOS and real time systems.
  • Object-oriented design where applicable.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with Agile or other SDLC practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • General office environment may sit for long periods of time.
