Senior Software Engineer (Java Fullstack)
Summary
Leads backend development for a multi-tenant SOC/ITSM platform (SecurityHub365) using Java/Spring Boot, Kafka, and MongoDB, while mentoring engineers and integrating AI tools for coding.
About Gruve
Gruve is an innovative software services startup dedicated to transforming enterprises to AI powerhouses. We specialize in cybersecurity, customer experience, cloud infrastructure, and advanced technologies such as Large Language Models (LLMs). Our mission is to assist our customers in their business strategies utilizing their data to make more intelligent decisions. As a well-funded early-stage startup, Gruve offers a dynamic environment with strong customer and partner networks.
Position Summary:
Gruve is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Java) for the SecurityHub365 platform to work closely with the Engineering team in Pune and drive backend delivery for Gruve’s multi-tenant Security Operations (SOC) and ITSM platform. SecurityHub365 ingests and correlates security-incident data, manages the ITSM lifecycle, and integrates with SIEM/XDR and enterprise systems. It runs as an event-driven microservice platform and is actively modernising across containerisation, cloud, and stronger platform foundations.
This is a hands-on build-and-lead role. The Lead Engineer will own significant parts of the backend, raise the engineering bar, mentor an early-career team, and drive delivery, while still writing and reviewing code daily. We are an AI-forward team, and using AI tooling effectively is central to how we build.
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
Design & Delivery Ownership
- Own the end-to-end design and delivery of backend services and features, within the platform’s architectural direction, from requirements and API contracts through implementation, testing, and production.
- Make design decisions within your services, set patterns, and guide the team through trade-offs.
- Contribute to and influence platform architecture alongside the platform architect.
Technical Leadership & Mentoring
- Provide day-to-day technical leadership to drive tech deliveries and solutioning and raise the engineering bar through code review and design guidance.
- Mentor junior/new engineers, grow their skills, and reduce single-points-of-failure by spreading knowledge.
Quality, Security & Reliability
- Drive testing strategy, security, resilience, and performance on a multi-tenant platform where correctness and tenant isolation matter.
- Own non-functional concerns: authentication and authorization, error handling, observability, and safe rollout.
AI-Augmented Engineering (core to this role)
- Use AI coding assistants and agentic tools (for example Claude Code, Claude, Copilot) day to day: scaffolding, refactoring, generating tests, and documentation.
- Apply strong prompt engineering and agentic, “vibe-coding” workflows: decompose work into well-scoped tasks, delegate to AI agents, steer them, and integrate the results cleanly.
- Exercise judgement on where AI helps (boilerplate, CRUD, mirrored patterns, tests, docs) versus where human rigour is required (security, authentication, correctness, and architecture). Review AI-generated code critically; never merge it blind.
- Help the team adopt AI well, setting sensible practices and review gates so speed never comes at the cost of quality.
Agile Delivery & Planning
- Drive sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, and breaking epics into deliverable stories.
- Produce defensible estimates grounded in the work, and sequence discovery and scope before committing timelines.
Collaboration & Stakeholders
- Partner with product and the SOC/automation teams to scope work, define boundaries, and turn requirements into buildable plans.
- Communicate clearly with stakeholders, manage expectations, and provide clear delivery status.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 6 to 8 years building systems in Java and React/Angular, min 2 years full stack development exp. with strong fundamentals (OOP, concurrency, data structures, clean code) and depth in Spring Boot.
- Proven experience designing and running microservices and RESTful APIs (contract-first / OpenAPI a plus).
- Hands-on with event-driven architecture using Apache Kafka (topics, consumers, delivery semantics, eventual-consistency trade-offs).
- Solid experience with MongoDB (data modelling, queries, indexing); working knowledge of relational databases.
- Experience with authentication and authorization in multi-tenant systems: JWT/OAuth2 and identity integration (LDAP/AD).
- Experience with containerisation and CI/CD: Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins (or equivalent), Git-based workflows, static analysis.
- Demonstrated technical leadership: mentoring, code review, and owning delivery for a squad.
- Fluency in Agile/Scrum and the ability to write clear user stories, acceptance criteria, and defensible estimates.
- Effective, hands-on use of AI development tools (AI assistants and agentic coding e.g. ClaudeCode) with sound judgement on review and quality.
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences; comfortable working with distributed teams across India and the US.
Preferred Qualifications/skills
- Familiarity with Azure cloud services and infrastructure-as-code.
- Exposure to security operations / SOC / ITSM domains, or integrations with SIEM/XDR (for example QRadar, Cisco XDR), Jira, or Cherwell.
- Experience modernising legacy systems and paying down technical debt.
- Experience mentoring or leading early-career engineers.
- Prior experience in a startup or high-growth technology environment.
- Hands-on, senior full stack engineer who combines strong system-design skills with Java & front end technologies.
