Senior Software Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer based in Brazil.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will join a client-facing engineering team and take shared ownership of building, improving, and delivering production software.
You will work closely with another senior engineer while collaborating directly with the client on a daily basis.
The role combines hands-on backend development with server-rendered frontend work and REST/API integrations.
You will be expected to independently manage your work, communicate timelines, identify risks, and help drive delivery without relying on a dedicated project-management layer.
The environment values autonomy, strong communication, rapid learning, and pragmatic engineering decisions.
You will need to become productive quickly within an existing codebase and establish effective working relationships with client stakeholders.
This is a full-time independent contractor position, remote within Latin America, with compensation of $70,000–$80,000 USD per year, depending on experience.

• Partner closely with another senior engineer to plan, build, test, and ship software while sharing ownership of delivery.

• Work directly with the client's team on a daily basis through standups, status updates, technical discussions, and scope conversations.

• Develop and maintain backend applications using Python and Flask, including database interactions through SQLAlchemy or a comparable ORM.

• Build and maintain frontend functionality using a server-rendered technology stack, including Jinja2, Bootstrap, JavaScript/jQuery, and Webpack.

• Design, implement, and maintain REST APIs and integrations with external systems and services.

• Own assigned work end-to-end, from understanding requirements and implementation through delivery and follow-up.

• Proactively identify risks, communicate timelines, track scope, and surface potential delivery issues without relying on a dedicated project manager.

• Ramp up quickly on an existing codebase, architecture, client environment, and internal tooling.

• Participate in technical discussions and contribute to practical engineering decisions that support reliable delivery.

• Collaborate effectively with client stakeholders and internal engineering partners throughout the development lifecycle.

Requirements

• Several years of professional software engineering experience at a genuinely senior level, with strong hands-on development capabilities.

• Proven production experience with Python and Flask, including SQLAlchemy or a comparable ORM.

• Strong experience with relational databases, particularly MySQL or MariaDB.

• Frontend development experience with Jinja2 templates, Bootstrap, JavaScript/jQuery, and Webpack, rather than relying exclusively on modern SPA frameworks.

• Hands-on experience designing, developing, and integrating REST APIs is essential.

• Strong spoken and written English, with the ability to communicate clearly with external clients on a daily basis.

• Experience working in consulting, professional services, IT services, outsourcing, or another client-facing environment is strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as a peer to another senior engineer rather than depending on a traditional manager-led structure.

• Strong ownership mindset, including the ability to manage scope, communicate progress, identify risks, and drive work forward.

• Ability to learn quickly and become productive within an unfamiliar codebase and client environment.

• Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

• Experience in insurance, risk, or fintech is a plus.

• Experience working in a two-person senior engineering model is advantageous.

• Familiarity with custom internal packages, proprietary tooling, or similar engineering environments is beneficial.
