Senior Software Engineer
Salary: $150,000 – $170,000 + Super
Permanent, full-time | Remote within Australia | Senior hands-on role
An established Australian software business is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help guide the next stage of its platform.
You’ll work directly with the CTO and remain close to the code, while also having a say in architecture, technical decisions and how the engineering team works.
There are no direct reports. This is an individual-contributor role for someone who leads through their technical ability, judgement and willingness to help others.
It could suit a strong Senior Engineer ready for more influence, or an experienced Technical Lead or Staff Engineer who wants to stay hands-on.
What you’ll work on
Designing and delivering changes across backend services, APIs and frontend applications
Taking ownership of complex technical problems that don’t have an obvious answer
Helping shape architecture and longer-term platform decisions
Investigating difficult production issues and helping prevent them from happening again
Making practical trade-offs between technical quality, delivery time and business priorities
Improving testing, code quality, documentation and development practices
Mentoring engineers through code reviews, design discussions and day-to-day guidance
Sharing technical knowledge and reducing reliance on individual team members
The technology
The main stack includes:
TypeScript and Node.js
React / React Native
AWS
SQL and relational databases
APIs and integrations
CI/CD
Strong TypeScript and Node.js experience is particularly important. You don’t need to be a DevOps specialist, but you should be comfortable working with AWS and supporting software in production.
What we’re looking for
Your current title could be Senior Engineer, Technical Lead, Staff Engineer or Principal Engineer. We’re more interested in the level at which you operate than the title itself.
Ideally, you’ll bring:
Around 10 or more years of commercial software-engineering experience
Strong hands-on TypeScript and Node.js skills
Experience designing backend services, APIs, integrations and data models
Solid React.js / React Native experience
Experience making meaningful architecture or system-design decisions
Ownership of technically complex work from design through to production
Experience supporting and improving an established production platform
Good troubleshooting skills and confidence handling technical escalations
The ability to explain your decisions and the trade-offs behind them
A practical understanding of product, delivery and commercial priorities
Experience mentoring engineers and improving standards across a team
We’ll want to understand what you personally owned, which decisions were yours and what changed as a result of your work.
Location and work rights
This is a remote position for candidates currently located in Australia with full Australian working rights.
There is no regular office requirement. The team may occasionally meet in Melbourne, usually no more than once or twice per year, but attendance is not mandatory. Reasonable travel costs will be covered for interstate employees who attend.
If much of the role sounds like you but you don’t have every technology listed, we’d still be happy to have a conversation.
