Senior Software Engineer (Python)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Python) based in India.

Join an open-source engineering team shaping the future of data orchestration through Apache Airflow. You’ll design and implement new features and components that improve how data practitioners build and operate reliable data workflows. The role combines deep Python engineering with distributed systems, performance, resiliency, and developer experience. You’ll work in a remote, globally distributed environment with opportunities to collaborate across engineering teams and the wider open-source community. Your contributions will reach a broad ecosystem of developers and organizations relying on modern data infrastructure. This is an opportunity to solve complex engineering challenges while directly contributing to a major open-source platform.

• Design, develop, and implement new Apache Airflow features and components.
• Improve the performance, scalability, reliability, and resiliency of Airflow and its surrounding ecosystem.
• Enhance the developer experience by identifying opportunities to simplify workflows, tooling, and engineering processes.
• Improve code quality, test coverage, and automated testing practices while reducing test execution time.
• Collaborate closely with engineering teammates and other technical teams to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions.
• Investigate and troubleshoot complex technical issues, working with customers when necessary to identify and implement solutions.
• Participate actively in the open-source community through GitHub, Slack, mailing lists, and other community channels.
• Contribute to the broader Airflow ecosystem and help steward a healthy, collaborative open-source community.
• Share knowledge and promote new capabilities through conferences, events, and other technical forums.
• Support continuous innovation by exploring new ideas and technologies that can improve data orchestration and engineering workflows.

Requirements:

• 5+ years of professional experience as a Python developer with strong hands-on software engineering expertise.
• Strong understanding of scalable and distributed systems, including the challenges associated with reliability and performance.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems and develop effective solutions.
• Creative and analytical approach to engineering, with a willingness to explore new ideas and approaches.
• Strong understanding of software testing, including unit testing and other forms of automated testing.
• Proactive approach to learning, staying current with industry trends, and expanding technical expertise.
• Strong collaboration skills, including active listening, knowledge sharing, constructive feedback, and cross-team cooperation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively through GitHub, Slack, Zoom, email, documentation, and pair programming.
• Comfortable working independently within a remote, distributed environment while maintaining strong collaboration with colleagues.
• Experience with Apache Airflow in production environments is a plus.
• Data engineering experience is advantageous.
• Contributions to open-source projects are highly valued.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and Docker is a plus.
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines is beneficial.
• Familiarity with Claude Code or similar agentic development tools is an advantage.
