Role Description

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain our core products and platforms within our proprietary agentic development environment. As a key technical driver on a fully remote team, you will collaborate closely and cross-functionally with product managers and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into seamless, highly reliable products that our customers love.

A successful candidate must be able to bridge technology and business language and concepts and have a deep appreciation for how technology trade-offs impact the customer experience.

You will be expected to:

• Architect & Build: Design and develop scalable backend and frontend systems utilizing modern architectural patterns, including microservices and RESTful APIs.
• Collaborate & Innovate: Partner with cross-functional teams to shape product direction while leveraging our proprietary agentic development environment to streamline delivery.
• Optimize for Scale: Build and maintain resilient systems for high-throughput environments using relational and NoSQL databases, message queues, and caching technologies.
• Ensure Security & Compliance: Implement rigorous security best practices, including encryption, authentication, and authorization tailored to financial systems.
• Drive Operational Excellence: Utilize cloud platforms, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines to smoothly deploy, monitor, and operate production services.

As a Senior Software Engineer at Rutuli, you will design, develop, and maintain back-end services that power the ERP platform, with a focus on reliability, performance, and security. You will collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate business requirements into scalable software solutions, including integrations with payment and regulatory systems. Daily responsibilities include writing clean, well-tested code, performing code reviews, troubleshooting production issues, and optimizing existing services and APIs. You will also contribute to architectural decisions, mentor less-experienced engineers, and help improve development processes and tooling. This is a full-time, fully-remote role based in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Area.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Strong foundation in Computer Science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, and distributed systems concepts.
• Demonstrated full-stack expertise with modern programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, TypeScript, React, or similar).
• Proficiency in Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and established design patterns for building maintainable, modular systems.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools.
• Excellent communication and technical documentation skills, with a proven ability to thrive and collaborate in a remote, cross-functional environment.
• Demonstrated ability to bridge technology and business and approach technology decisions in a customer-centric way.

Proven experience in Software Development and Programming, delivering production-grade applications.

Preference will be given to individuals with:

• Previous experience in fintech, payments, or other complex, transaction-heavy domains.
• Deep knowledge of security and compliance protocols specific to payment processing and financial technology.
