Senior Software Engineer

Salary: AUD 200000 - 240000 per annum, + Equity

Wanted: A software engineer who doesn't need a ticket to tell them what to do.

We're representing an ambitious, well-backed Melbourne technology business looking for an exceptional Senior Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, making decisions and taking responsibility for the outcome.

The business is tackling some significant challenges involving payments, claims, reconciliations and financial workflows in a sector crying out for better technology.Meaningful work, genuinely i nteresting engineering and considerably less corporate theatre.

The team.

It's a deliberately small, experienced team, several members have worked together before. There's an established culture of trust, high standards and accountability, without unnecessary management layers. You'll work directly with stakeholders, challenge assumptions, design solutions and own what you build through to production. You won't be handed a 40-page specification. You'll be expected to help figure out what actually needs building. And sometimes the best solution is less code. Or none at all.

The engineering.

The stack is TypeScript end-to-end, including:

• React Native and Remix
• PostgreSQL and AWS
• AI agents and modern engineering tooling

The philosophy is straightforward: build reliable, maintainable software without unnecessary complexity.
AI is embraced to accelerate development, but engineering judgement and accountability remain firmly human.
Nobody gets extra points for introducing six microservices to solve a problem that needed one sensible database query.

About you.

You've spent 5+ years building software, are comfortable across the stack and care as much about the problem you're solving as the code you're writing.

Ideally, you bring:

• Strong full-stack engineering experience, particularly TypeScript, React and backend development
• Solid understanding of APIs, data modelling and production systems
• A pragmatic approach to architecture and problem-solving
• Confidence working directly with stakeholders and making technical decisions
• Curiosity, humility and a healthy appetite for responsibility
• Experience in payments, accounting, financial systems or complex transactional platforms would be particularly interesting.
• A computer science or engineering degree would be welcome, but capability and judgement matter more.
