Senior Software Systems Architect_Edge Computing&Distributed Platforms
Summary
The Senior Software Systems Architect will design and lead the development of distributed and edge computing solutions for space-based systems. The role involves translating operational requirements into robust software architectures across ground, cloud, and on-board environments using technologies like Kubernetes, Go, and Python.
Who we are:
You just found your job destination!
At Thales Alenia Space, we believe in space as a new horizon to build a more sustainable Life on Earth. Space-based solutions contribute to connecting people, bridging the digital divide, navigating efficiently and monitoring our planet.
If you are willing to work on stunning space programs for a leading satellite manufacturer, Thales Alenia Space, just do not hesitate and apply on-line now!
Based in Belval (Esch-sur-Alzette), Thales Alenia Space in Luxembourg is a Digital Competence Center that develops state-of-the-art digital solutions, using big data, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies to address complex end-to-end space systems’ challenges.
What we can do together:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Systems Architect to shape the architecture of distributed and edge computing solutions across ground, cloud, on-premises, and on-board environments.
You will translate operational needs and system constraints into sustainable software architectures and guide key technology decisions across distributed and edge computing solutions.
You will work at the intersection of distributed systems, edge and on-board computing, platform engineering, infrastructure integration, cybersecurity, and software lifecycle considerations.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Own the software architecture, key interfaces, and its evolution throughout the product lifecycle.
- Translate customer needs and system constraints into clear architectural and technical decisions.
- Design distributed and federated platform architectures across edge, ground, cloud, and on-board environments.
- Address resource constraints, intermittent connectivity, autonomous operation, and disconnected conditions as part of the architecture.
- Lead technology selection and architectural trade-offs, balancing performance, resilience, interoperability, cybersecurity, cost, and maintainability.
- Promote reusable platform capabilities, common patterns, and architectural consistency across the product portfolio.
- Maintain the architecture baseline and the technical documentation required to support implementation, integration, and evolution.
- Work with the Cybersecurity Authority, development, DevSecOps, integration, and validation teams to ensure that architectural decisions are correctly implemented and verified.
- Provide technical leadership during bids, customer discussions, technical reviews, and engineering activities, while assessing technologies relevant to future solutions.
About you:
We are looking for an engineer with significant experience in distributed systems, edge computing, and software platform architectures.
Specifically, you should have:
- Min.5 years of experience in software architecture or systems design for distributed, cloud-native, embedded, or edge computing systems.
- Strong systems-thinking skills, with the ability to structure complex systems into clear boundaries, interfaces, and responsibilities.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, including communication, resilience, data consistency, and operation across multiple computing environments.
- Experience designing software for resource-constrained environments or systems with limited connectivity.
- Good knowledge of cloud-native platforms, including Kubernetes or comparable orchestration technologies, with solid Linux and networking foundations.
- Proficiency in Go and Python; experience with Rust or another memory-safe systems programming language is a plus.
- Good understanding of software integration patterns and distributed system interfaces.
- Experience with architecture modelling and documentation.
- Practical knowledge of DevSecOps practices and their impact on software architecture and delivery.
- Understanding of cybersecurity-by-design and experience integrating security requirements into software architectures.
- Ability to evaluate architectural options, justify technical trade-offs, and influence multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Additional skills and experience in any of the following topics would be highly valued:
- Space systems, ground segments, on-board computing, or payload processing.
- Lightweight Kubernetes distributions, WebAssembly, unikernels, or other low-footprint execution technologies.
- Earth observation, on-board data processing, AI workloads, or algorithm optimization for edge environments.
- Hardware-software integration, embedded systems, or specialized processing technologies in high-reliability industries.
- Domain knowledge in Distributed digital twins, federated platforms, or edge-to-cloud architectures.
- Software engineering standards and processes used in space or other mission-critical environments, such as ECSS.
We are looking for skilled and ambitious people as we continue to build our team and create a positive, diverse, and collaborative work environment.
