Senior Staff Engineer
You will design, build, and test tax compliance platforms, guide technical strategy, improve foundational architecture and reliability, build AI guardrails, lead incident response improvements, and mentor engineers on scalable solutions and effective AI usage.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test the tax compliance platform
- Scale Ruby on Rails and TypeScript/React applications
- Collaborate with Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Compliance, and Operations
- Build services, tools, and APIs
- Build AI guardrails into the tax platform
- Own the technical strategy and roadmap for the team’s domain
- Identify and prioritize foundational architecture investments
- Lead incident response process and tooling improvements
- Mentor and develop engineers
- Improve team capabilities through pairing, code review, and knowledge sharing
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience
- Experience designing and developing distributed systems using multiple programming languages
- Experience influencing multiple teams on scaling, refactoring, and optimization
- Experience architecting, building, and testing large-scale production code
- Ability to simplify complex and ambiguous problems
- Ability to communicate technical complexity and facilitate tradeoffs
- Experience with test-driven development
- Ability to build maintainable, structured, and documented code
- Experience building fault-tolerant, mission-critical software
- Experience in highly regulated and high-risk domains
- Experience with payroll, taxes, or compliance is preferred
- Familiarity with AI tools, LLMs, and agents
- Experience embedding AI into development workflows
- Experience mentoring engineers on AI usage
- Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React experience is a bonus
