Senior Staff Security Architect

Role Overview

Coupang’s Security Architects play a critical role in defining and governing the security architecture that protects Coupang’s internal business systems, infrastructure, and enterprise platforms at scale. As a Security Architect, you will own the security strategy, standards, and architectural direction across identity, authentication, authorization, credential management, cryptography, and data protection domains. You will act as a principal technical leader, partnering closely with engineering and platform teams to build secure-by-design systems while driving security automation and operational excellence across the organization.

This role is highly hands-on. While responsible for architectural leadership and policy definition, you will also contribute to software development, automation initiatives, and technical implementation to enable scalable security solutions throughout Coupang.

What You Will Do

• Architect and scale enterprise security foundations for Coupang’s rapidly growing business, establishing reference architectures, security standards, and governance frameworks across identity and access management, authentication, authorization, cryptographic services, and data protection.
• Design and implement security architecture for large-scale distributed systems, ensuring secure access to business-critical applications, infrastructure, and internal platforms.
• Define and govern security policies, authorization models, policy languages, and security frameworks that enable consistent implementation across engineering organizations.
• Build security automation solutions and security platforms using modern software engineering practices, with a focus on improving scalability, consistency, and operational efficiency.
• Partner closely with software engineers, infrastructure teams, platform owners, and security leaders to embed security requirements into system design and development lifecycles.
• Drive the architecture and evolution of identity and access management ecosystems, including authentication systems, authorization services, credential management platforms, and enterprise access control frameworks.
• Review complex system designs and provide architectural guidance for highly secure environments, balancing business requirements with security, scalability, and operational needs.
• Establish best practices for applied cryptography, key management, PKI infrastructure, and secure credential lifecycle management.
• Contribute hands-on technical solutions through coding, prototyping, automation, and security tooling development, primarily leveraging Python and related technologies.
• Continuously improve Coupang’s security posture by identifying security gaps, evaluating emerging technologies, and driving strategic security initiatives across the organization.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related technical field.
• 8+ years of experience or 10+ years of experience in security engineering, security architecture, platform engineering, or related technical disciplines.
• Deep expertise in at least one of the following security domains:
• Identity and Access Management (IAM)
• Authentication and Authorization (OIDC, OAuth 2.0, Federation)
• Applied Cryptography and Key Management
• Credential Management
• Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
• Security Policy Frameworks and Access Management Platforms
• Strong understanding of secure system design principles in large-scale distributed environments.
• Hands-on software development experience with Python and the ability to design, develop, and automate security solutions.
• Experience driving architecture decisions across complex infrastructure and platform environments.
• Ability to solve ambiguous, high-impact technical challenges through systems thinking and strong engineering judgment.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence engineers, architects, and technical leadership.
• English proficiency is helpful but not required; deep technical expertise and domain knowledge are more important.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing and securing large-scale enterprise environments comparable in complexity to major financial institutions, global technology companies, large cloud providers, or highly regulated enterprises.
• Deep expertise in one or more specialized areas:
• OIDC, OAuth 2.0, Federation, and Access Governance
• Applied Cryptography and Enterprise Key Management
• Credential Lifecycle Management
• PKI Design and Operations
• Policy Languages and Authorization Frameworks
• Experience building or operating enterprise-scale IAM, Zero Trust, or Access Management platforms.
• Understanding of intrusion detection, threat detection, or security monitoring concepts.
• Experience designing infrastructure platforms and distributed systems at significant scale.
• Demonstrated ability to balance architectural leadership with hands-on implementation and technical execution.
• Experience working in high-growth technology environments where organizational scale and system complexity evolve rapidly.
• Industry certifications such as CISSP, ISSAP, CCSP, SABSA, TOGAF, or equivalent are a plus.
