Senior/Staff Software Engineer, Platform

Summary

Platform engineer building internal developer tooling, TypeScript libraries/SDKs, AWS infrastructure as code (Terraform/Pulumi), Buildkite CI/CD with per-PR ephemeral environments, and reliability/observability for an AI-native mortgage loan origination system. Goal is to boost product engineers' shipping velocity at a US fintech startup.

About the company

Our client is an AI-native Loan Origination System built to streamline the mortgage loan process. Its platform offers AI-powered document management, automated task lists, configurable business rules, and more, enabling mortgage lenders to automate tedious work, increase quality, and scale their operations with extreme efficiency.

The company is AI-native from the ground up: not bolted-on AI, but an AI-first architecture. Its platform already powers tens of billions of dollars in home loans, with the goal of saving lenders billions every year. A top-10 US mortgage lender is a primary customer, on track to go live by the end of 2026, a milestone that makes the company profitable and brings it to roughly 5% market share. Several other major lenders are in late stages of the sales process, and the company has 3 years of runway.

Next priority: the other 95% of the market. Long-term, the plan is to expand horizontally, owning more of end-to-end origination, or into other loan products.

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior/Staff Software Engineer, Platform with significant experience building tooling and systems. You’ll design self-serve platforms, libraries, and automation that enable product engineers to ship features quickly and reliably. This role is crucial for enhancing engineering velocity and ensuring the platform’s performance, reliability, and scale as the company grows.

You’ll work on a modern tech stack: a TypeScript monorepo with end-to-end type safety, 100% infrastructure-as-code, and per-PR staging environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the AWS infrastructure using Terraform and Pulumi, treating infrastructure as a product for engineering teams.
  • Design and maintain internal developer tooling, TypeScript libraries, and shared SDKs to standardize how the team builds and ships software.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (Buildkite) and per-pull-request ephemeral environments to make deploying easy and safe.
  • Drive platform reliability through SLOs, auto-scaling, and incident response, while enhancing observability with tools like Datadog.
  • Solve scaling challenges across the AI-native mortgage platform, from database tuning (Aurora PostgreSQL) to compute autoscaling.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in platform engineering, focused on building internal developer tooling and managing AWS infrastructure.
  • Ability to go beyond infrastructure and build backend internal TypeScript libraries for developer tooling.
  • Strong infrastructure/backend experience at a high-growth tech startup.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and Node
  • You may not ship features day-to-day, but you’re comfortable reading, navigating, and making meaningful changes to the codebase when needed.
  • Deep AWS experience across compute, networking, storage, and security (ECS, Lambda, VPC, ALB, IAM, RDS, ElastiCache, MSK, OpenSearch, S3, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, GuardDuty).
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and per-PR ephemeral environments that make deploying feel easy and safe (ideally with Buildkite).
  • Strong Terraform and/or Pulumi proficiency: modules, workspaces, and CI-driven plan/apply workflows.
  • Reliability engineering experience: SLOs, error budgets, and incident response.
  • Strong written communication for documenting complex systems.

Nice to have

  • Track record building production observability stacks (Datadog, CloudWatch, Sentry, distributed tracing, SLOs).
  • Experience building internal platforms or developer tooling: code generation, CLIs, templates, shared SDKs, or frameworks that improve engineering velocity.

Benefits

  • Remote-first
  • 100% of employee and family medical premiums covered.
  • Vision and dental.
  • HSA/FSA.
  • Flexible time off.
