We’re committed to doing things “The Right Way,” delivering exceptional service and precision craftsmanship for both residential and commercial projects. Our team values integrity, growth, and sustainability—recycling materials and integrating green solutions wherever possible. With over 100 skilled professionals, we strive to be one of Virginia’s top mechanical contractors while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and work-life balance.

What You’ll Do

The Senior Startup & Warranty Service Technician is responsible for the commissioning, startup, and diagnostic troubleshooting of complex commercial and industrial HVAC equipment and systems. This role serves as a technical authority in the field, performing equipment startups per manufacturer and design specifications, resolving warranty-related mechanical issues, and diagnosing root causes of system underperformance or failure. This position requires deep technical expertise across multiple equipment platforms, strong customer-facing communication skills, and the ability to work independently on high-complexity projects with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities include:

Equipment Startup & Commissioning

? Perform startup, checkout, and commissioning of chillers, boilers, air handling units, RTUs, VRF/VRV systems, pumps, cooling towers, and associated mechanical/BAS-integrated equipment.

? Verify proper installation, wiring, piping, and controls sequencing prior to startup in accordance with manufacturer requirements and project specifications.

? Complete and submit manufacturer startup documentation to activate and validate warranty coverage.

? Coordinate startup schedules with project managers, general contractors, owners, and manufacturer representatives.

? Perform functional performance testing and verify system operation against design intent and sequence of operations.

Warranty Service & Diagnostics

? Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and controls-related issues on HVAC equipment under warranty.

? Determine root cause of failures and distinguish between installation error, manufacturer defect, controls malfunction, and application/design issues.

? Process warranty claims with equipment manufacturers, including documentation, parts requests, and labor claim submission.

? Perform repairs, component replacement, and system adjustments to resolve warranty issues in a timely manner.

? Interface directly with manufacturer technical support and factory representatives on escalated or unresolved issues.

Preventive Maintenance & Equipment Support

? Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on commercial HVAC equipment, ensuring optimal operation and reliability.

? Conduct inspections and provide recommendations for repairs, replacements, or system improvements.

? Maintain accurate service records, startup logs, and maintenance history for each piece of equipment serviced.

Technical Leadership & Documentation

? Serve as a mentor and technical resource for junior technicians; provide field training on startup procedures and diagnostic techniques.

? Read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, submittals, and sequences of operation.

? Maintain thorough, accurate documentation of all startups, service calls, and warranty work in company CRM/service management software.

? Communicate findings, recommendations, and job status clearly to customers, project managers, and internal leadership.

Safety & Compliance

? Adhere to all company, OSHA, and site-specific safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and working-at-heights procedures.

? Maintain compliance with EPA refrigerant handling regulations and hold required certifications.

? Operate and maintain company vehicle, tools, and diagnostic equipment in safe working condition.

What You Bring

Required:

? 5+ years of experience in commercial/industrial HVAC service, startup, or commissioning.

? Strong working knowledge of chillers, boilers, air handling equipment, VRF systems, pumps, and building automation/controls integration.

? EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.

? Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and controls issues.

? Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical drawings, submittals, and equipment schematics.

? Valid driver's license with clean driving record.

? Strong verbal and written communication skills for customer- and manufacturer-facing interactions.

Preferred:

? Manufacturer-specific startup/service certifications (e.g., Trane, Carrier, Daikin, York, Mitsubishi, Liebert/Vertiv, etc.).

? NATE certification.

? Experience with building automation systems (BAS) such as Niagara/Tridium, Johnson Controls, Siemens, or Honeywell.

? Journeyman or Master HVAC license, where applicable by state/local jurisdiction.

? Prior experience working directly with manufacturer warranty programs and claims processes.

Physical & Work Conditions

? Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally.

? Ability to work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, crawlspaces, and other varied job site conditions.

? Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces as needed.

? Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and tolerate exposure to mechanical noise, dust, and temperature extremes.

Work Environment

This position requires regular travel between job sites, with time split between new construction/commissioning projects and existing facility service calls. On-call rotation for emergency warranty or service issues may be required.
