Senior Systems Administrator and Cybersecurity Lead

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Systems Administrator and Cybersecurity Lead to join our small but established technology company in Hamilton East.
We are looking for someone with strong technical knowledge, sound judgement and at least 10 years of relevant experience. This role goes well beyond routine systems maintenance. You will have genuine responsibility for the security, reliability and future direction of our systems and infrastructure.
About the Role
We are seeking a self-motivated and highly experienced systems professional to take responsibility for our internal systems, cloud infrastructure, customer-hosting environments and cybersecurity practices.
You will be the trusted escalation point for complex systems and security issues and will work closely with company leadership, software engineers and project teams.
The ideal candidate will be technically capable, practical and commercially aware. You will understand that good technical decisions need to consider security, reliability, customer impact, cost and the wider needs of the business.
You will be someone who asks “why?” before “how?”, identifies risks early and is confident explaining technical issues and recommendations to both technical and non-technical people.
Key Responsibilities
Managing and maintaining internal systems, servers, networks and cloud infrastructure
Overseeing customer-hosting environments
Leading cybersecurity practices and security improvements
Identifying and managing infrastructure and cybersecurity risks
Managing system access, patching, hardening and vulnerability remediation
Maintaining monitoring, logging and alerting systems
Leading the response to significant systems or cybersecurity incidents
Managing backups, disaster recovery and business continuity processes
Planning and implementing system upgrades, migrations and infrastructure improvements
Automating routine systems administration and deployment tasks
Maintaining accurate technical and security documentation
Providing technical guidance and mentoring to other team members
Participating in strategic technology and business planning with the team
Desired Experience
At least 10 years of relevant experience in systems administration, infrastructure engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, site reliability engineering or a similar senior technical role
A relevant tertiary qualification in information technology, computer science, cybersecurity or a related discipline, or equivalent extensive industry experience
Strong experience administering Linux-based environments
Experience managing cloud-hosted, virtualised or customer-facing systems
Strong knowledge of networking, firewalls, DNS, TLS, VPNs and system security
Experience with vulnerability management, system hardening and security patching
Experience managing backups, recovery and disaster-recovery processes
Experience with monitoring, logging, alerting and incident response
Strong scripting or automation skills
The ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Sound judgement and the ability to work independently
Experience with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, infrastructure as code, containers, CI/CD, cybersecurity frameworks or security audits would be an advantage.
Relevant professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, Microsoft, AWS, Red Hat, Cisco, CompTIA or ITIL would also be beneficial but are not essential.
