Senior Systems & Network Engineer (St Andrew's Community Hospital)

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, IT Infrastructure & Security, this role serves as a senior technical resource for systems and network infrastructure. It provides technical consultation, solution and design reviews, and escalation support for complex incidents, changes, and projects.

The role is responsible for designing, operating, securing, and continuously improving the organisation’s server, virtualisation, storage, backup, network, and cloud services. It ensures infrastructure reliability, performance, resilience, and lifecycle readiness while supporting technical decision-making and collaborating with internal teams, vendors, and service providers.

Job Scope:

• Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, virtualisation, storage, backup, and related infrastructure services.

• Monitor system health, performance, capacity, patching, backups, resilience, and lifecycle risks.

• Maintain secure system configurations, access controls, privileged accounts, and recovery readiness in accordance with organisational security standards.

• Develop and maintain system configuration standards, build documentation, operational procedures, and automation scripts.

• Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot routers, switches, wireless networks, firewalls, VPNs, internet connectivity, and related network services.

• Assess requirements and design secure, scalable, and resilient network solutions for systems, sites, cloud services, and third-party integrations.

• Design, support, and review Azure and AWS connectivity, routing, VPNs, DNS, network security controls, resilience, and on-premises integration.

• Oversee network monitoring, performance, configuration backups, restoration readiness, capacity, security, and technology lifecycle management.

• Periodically review firewall rules, network access controls, VPN configurations, wireless security, and network segmentation.

• Manage infrastructure changes, projects, upgrades, and enhancements through assessment, planning, implementation, testing, documentation, and post-implementation review.

• Provide technical consultation and escalation support for complex incidents, problems, infrastructure changes, and project implementations.

• Review technical designs, configurations, and troubleshooting approaches to ensure quality, security, consistency, and compliance with organisational standards.

• Coordinate infrastructure activities with internal stakeholders, vendors, service providers, and other technical teams.

• Maintain accurate diagrams, inventories, configuration records, operational manuals, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.

• Support root-cause analysis, disaster recovery testing, vulnerability and lifecycle risk management, technical audits, knowledge transfer.

• Participate in scheduled after-hours maintenance or emergency support where required.

• Perform other relevant duties consistent with the job role.
  

Requirements:

• Recognised degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering or a related discipline.

• Equivalent professional experience may be considered. Relevant certifications such as CCNP/CCNA, Microsoft, VMware, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks or cloud certifications are advantageous.

• Hands-on systems and network engineering experience.

• Proven experience independently managing enterprise networks, firewalls, VPNs and wireless platforms.

• Strong experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, virtualisation, storage and backup.

• Experience providing systems consultation, technical review and escalation support.

• Strong knowledge of enterprise routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs and segmentation.

• Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, virtualisation, storage and backup.

• Independently owns network activities and provides authoritative systems engineering support.

• Strong analytical, communication, documentation and collaborative skills.
