Senior Tax Accountant
Description
Turn complex compliance into confident outcomes. Bring your Australian public practice expertise to a Senior Accountant role, delivering accurate, review-ready work and helping improve the way the practice operates.
Work Setup: Work from Home
Role Overview
Manage Australian SME accounting and tax compliance from source records to Director review. You’ll own year-end work, statutory reporting, job budgets and documented workpapers, while supporting client communications within clear approval boundaries and introducing AI-assisted bookkeeping once core work is established.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver year-end accounting and tax compliance: Prepare financial statements and income tax returns for companies, trusts, partnerships, sole traders and individuals; review trust distribution resolutions, unpaid present entitlements (UPEs) and beneficiary entitlements; prepare pre-30 June tax planning estimates and workpapers for Director review. Handle occasional Division 7A loan identification, minimum yearly repayments and loan schedules, plus annual FBT returns and workpapers.
Keep ledgers and statutory reporting accurate: Review and clean up Xero ledgers, including bank reconciliations, journals, accruals, fixed asset registers and depreciation. Prepare BAS/IAS, GST reconciliations, PAYG instalment reviews, year-end STP and superannuation reconciliations; use ATO online services for agents to check ICA/ITA balances, lodgement status, prefill data, outstanding obligations and lodgement program reporting.
Manage SMSF and corporate compliance: Use BGL Simple Fund 360 to prepare annual financials, member statements, SMSF annual returns and audit packs, and liaise with the independent auditor. Use BGL CAS 360 for ASIC annual reviews, solvency resolutions, company changes and registers.
Own job delivery and approval workflows: Maintain job statuses, daily timesheets and budgets in Xero Practice Manager (XPM), flagging overruns before time is spent, and keep a standard documented workpaper file for every job. Prepare annual compliance proposals and engagement renewals in Practice Ignition, and draft information requests and client query emails for Director approval. No direct client contact without the Director’s written authorisation; authorised routine written follow-ups must use the practice email under the firm’s name. All calls, meetings, pricing, scope and advice remain with the Director.
Improve bookkeeping processes: From month 3, once core work is established, help implement and run AI-assisted bookkeeping and transaction coding: build rules, review exceptions, document processes and measure time saved.
Skills & Experience
5–7 years’ accounting experience, including at least 4 years in Australian public practice (onshore or offshore for an Australian firm), and experience independently completing full year-end compliance for companies, trusts and individuals, and serving SME business-services clients with turnover up to approximately $6M.
Strong working knowledge of Australian income tax for companies, trusts, partnerships and individuals; trust taxation, UPEs and s100A awareness; Division 7A, FBT, CGT and GST. Able to handle Division 7A and desirable to handle FBT competently when they arise.
Hands-on Xero skills and intermediate or higher Excel proficiency, plus experience managing job lists and timesheets in XPM or a similar practice management system. XPM experience is highly regarded; Practice Ignition and exposure to AI or bookkeeping automation tools are desirable.
BGL Simple Fund 360 experience covering SMSF annual financials, member statements, returns and audit packs, and BGL CAS 360 experience in ASIC corporate secretarial work are advantages.
Excellent written and spoken English, including drafting client-facing emails with minimal editing. Able to work autonomously from source records to review-ready files, self-review carefully, meet peak lodgement deadlines, raise issues early and protect client confidentiality. Process-minded, receptive to review feedback and willing to document improvements and adopt AI tools.
