Senior Technical Product Owner (Marketplace)
Summary
The Senior Technical Product Owner will lead a high-stakes migration of professional sellers to a modern platform, managing backlogs, API integrations, and cross-functional delivery. This role requires strong technical fluency and product judgment to coordinate complex system transitions while minimizing business disruption.
At Trade Me, we're about connecting Kiwi to create the life they want. Whether it's the big things like finding a home, a job, a car or growing their business, or the smaller things, like finding that right bedside table or parting ways with some old stuff. At Trade Me our vision is to be the place where Kiwi look first.
Senior Technical Product Owners bring structure and momentum to complex work. This fixed-term role takes a high-stakes migration from plan to delivery. We're moving our professional sellers onto a modern platform - a programme touching listings, billing, search and the daily operations of thousands of Kiwi businesses, many reaching us via integrators and e-commerce platforms. It's primarily a technical delivery role, but you'll bring product thinking to prioritise features and cohorts, limiting risk and laying a foundation for future product change.
Here is what you can expect from this role:
- Own the migration plan and backlog end to end - sequencing thin slices, mapping migration paths by cohort, and managing dependencies across engineering, platform teams and an offshore delivery partner.
- Much seller activity reaches us via partner integrations, feeds and e-commerce platforms, so you'll shape the API and integration approach with engineering and co-ordinate release timing.
- Hold the programme's central trade-off with a whole-of-Trade-Me lens: we move fast, but within agreed guardrails benchmarked per cohort, so sellers keep trading and we're protected.
- Partner with the Product Manager on product judgement - value, viability, feasibility, usability - and engineering leadership on technical trade-offs, tooling and readiness.
- Own risk as a live discipline that enables bold decisions, not a reporting exercise - driving mitigations to closure and escalating early.
- Lead release, cutover and rollback planning with product, customer experience, marketing, account management and sales, so every cohort is well prepared.
- Build trust with a broad stakeholder group - liaising with sponsors and senior leadership, articulating trade-offs and keeping everyone informed..
What you will bring to our team:
- 5+ years in senior product or delivery leadership roles - you bring structure to many moving parts and coordinate delivery across streams.
- Experience migrating customers off a legacy system with minimal disruption is a big plus - you know how cohorts, transition states, cutover and rollback work.
- Experience delivering change that depends on third parties - integrators, partners or API consumers - where you influenced someone else's roadmap.
- Experience planning customer-facing releases with marketing, sales, account management and support - a migration is as much a customer engagement exercise as an engineering one.
- Skill in bringing teams with different but equally valid priorities to a shared, evidence-backed answer, and the commercial literacy to make rigorous prioritization calls.
- Exceptional risk management and robust, risk-based decision-making.
- An outstanding communicator - able to explain trade-offs simply, align competing stakeholders and build trust at every level, including offshore teams.
- Technical fluency to partner with engineering on trade-offs and release readiness. A software development or testing background, or knowledge of e-commerce, billing, data, search, or APIs and integration patterns, is a plus.
