Senior VB5 Developer (VB5/VB6, COM, ActiveX, SQL Server)

The Opportunity

Join a US client's engineering team as their senior Visual Basic developer, keeping a mature business application running and moving forward: the production issues that have to be fixed, the calculations that have to be right, and the processes nobody else can figure out. The application is built in VB5/VB6 on a SQL Server database. Fully remote from Latin America, US business hours, 18 month contract.

What You'll Bring

  1. Advanced VB5 in production. Several years of shipping, supporting and debugging real VB5 applications, with VB6 exposure a plus. You can read a large codebase you did not write and find the business rule inside it.

  2. COM and ActiveX depth. You know how components are registered and versioned, what binary compatibility does, and how to track down the DLL and OCX problems that break callers.

  3. Data access against SQL Server with ADO, and ideally DAO or RDO, plus working T-SQL. You can trace a wrong number from a form into the stored procedure behind it and fix the data safely.

  4. Experience with third party OCX controls and Crystal Reports, including getting them installed and running on a current version of Windows.

  5. The ability to turn a short verbal brief into scoped, finished work. Documentation is thin or missing, requirements often arrive as a conversation, and you fill in the rest yourself. You share progress every day without being chased.

  6. Skilled AI use that streamlines your work rather than doing it for you. You can walk through and defend everything you submit.

  7. Excellent written and verbal English.

What Sets You Apart

  1. Experience moving VB5/VB6 systems to .NET, including reading VB5/6 to extract business rules and proving the new version behaves like the old one.

  2. Hands on C# or VB.NET experience.

  3. Source control and build discipline in a legacy codebase: Git, repeatable builds and a clean installer.

  4. Experience keeping VB6 applications stable on current versions of Windows.

  5. A background in warehousing, distribution, or logistics.
