Senior VMware Engineer

Job Description :

We are looking for a highly skilled VMware Engineer to lead an infrastructure refresh project, transitioning our systems to the latest models of Dell and HP hardware.

Roles and responsibility :

• Analyse the existing virtual environment, identify dependencies, and develop a detailed migration plan, including timelines, resource requirements, and risk mitigation strategies.
• Assess hardware compatibility with VMware products, ensuring the selected hardware meets performance, scalability, and reliability requirements.
• Create a comprehensive design document that outlines the new environment's architecture, including network configuration, storage setup, and virtual machine placement.
• Perform thorough testing on the new hardware to validate performance, compatibility, and stability before the actual migration.
• Plan the migration steps, including data transfer methods, downtime minimization techniques, and rollback procedures in case of issues.
• Create and use scripts and automation tools to streamline the migration process, reducing manual effort and the potential for errors.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including network, storage, and application teams, to ensure a smooth migration process.
• Continuously monitor the migration for any issues and provide immediate troubleshooting and resolution to minimize downtime.
• Document all stages of the migration process, including configurations, procedures, and any issues encountered, and provide regular progress reports to stakeholders.
• Ensure the new environment is running optimally, address any post-migration issues, and implement performance tuning and optimizations as necessary.
• Proficient in deploying, configuring, and managing VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi hosts and vCenter Server.
• Proven experience in planning and executing hardware migrations, including assessing current infrastructure, developing migration strategies, and implementing new hardware.
• Expertise in configuring and managing storage systems (SAN, NAS) within a VMware environment, including data migration between storage arrays.
• Strong understanding of network configuration and troubleshooting in virtualized environments, including vSwitches, VLANs, and distributed switches.
• Experience with implementing and managing disaster recovery solutions and backup strategies in a VMware environment, ensuring data integrity and availability during migration.
• Ability to monitor, analyze, and optimize performance for VMware environments, ensuring optimal performance on new hardware.
• Proficiency with vMotion and Storage vMotion for live migration of virtual machines and their storage between hosts and datastores without downtime.
• Skills in scripting and automation (e.g., PowerCLI, Python) to streamline migration processes and automate repetitive tasks.
• Knowledge of security best practices and compliance requirements in virtualized environments, ensuring that the new hardware adheres to organizational and regulatory standards.
• Experience in project management, including creating detailed migration plans, coordinating with stakeholders, managing timelines, and documenting the entire migration process.
• Experience in managing HP and DELL server hardware including rack-mounted and blade servers.

Qualification :

• A minimum of 5+ years in comparative industry experience
• Bachelor's degree preferably in Computer Science or Information Technology
• Working knowledge of ITIL, Data Analytics, Project Management
• The position will cover weekend duty on rotational basis.
• Certification is a plus
