Summary
Senior full-stack web engineer at The Economist Group designing and building scalable web products for a global audience — responsive React/Next.js frontends, backend services and APIs, and AWS cloud-native infrastructure — while mentoring engineers and driving testing, observability, and CI/CD best practices.
In this role you will design and build scalable web products that reach a global audience, spanning frontend and backend systems. You will work at the intersection of product, platform, and engineering to shape reliable, high-performance services. You’ll collaborate across Product, Design and cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end solutions and help raise the engineering bar. - Design, build, and evolve scalable web applications across the stack
- Develop responsive, accessible frontends using React and Next.js
- Build and maintain backend services and APIs supporting features and integrations
- Design robust system architectures balancing scalability, performance, and maintainability
- Own performance across the stack including frontend experience, backend efficiency, and caching strategies
- Drive best practices in testing, observability, and CI/CD across services in production
- Work with AWS cloud-native technologies for compute, storage, and managed databases
- Collaborate with Product, Design, and cross-functional teams to shape end-to-end solutions
- Contribute to technical direction, mentor engineers, and raise the engineering bar within the team
- Experience in frontend and backend engineering
- Strong fullstack experience with JavaScript or TypeScript
- Production applications with React and Next.js
- Experience designing and developing APIs (REST and/or GraphQL)
- Understanding of modern web architecture including SSR, static generation, and caching
- Hands-on experience with AWS and cloud-native system design
- Strong grasp of performance, accessibility, and scalable system design
- Experience with CI/CD, containerisation, and infrastructure as code
