Sergeant - Foot Patrol Team and Bylaw Support (Internal only) 2026

The Victoria Police Department is seeking a Sergeant to fill a temporary position leading the Foot Patrol and Bylaw Team in support of the City of Victoria's Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan. The purpose and mandate of the team is to enhance coordinated enforcement and service-linked responses to disorder, encampments, and property-related concerns. The Foot Patrol and Bylaw Support Team also serves as a liaison between partner agencies, facilitating effective communication, coordination, and joint action on complex community safety issues.

Job Description:

  • Schedule - Tuesday - Friday:
    • Week 1 - 0700-1700
    • Week 2 - 0800-1800
    • Week 3 - 1000-2000
  • Work alongside City of Victoria to seek compliance and enforce, City bylaws, various Provincial statutes, Federal Statues and the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners
  • Effectively communicate with individuals and groups, work collaboratively with City of Victoria, CSD’s outreach teams and other community / partner agencies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor others, and effectively manage teams
  • Demonstrated experience planning, implementing, and leading projects
  • Demonstrated ability working with community groups and partner agencies
  • Well-developed crisis intervention and de-escalation (CID) skills
  • Demonstrated ability building connections with and interacting with marginalized populations
  • Working knowledge of City of Victoria Bylaws - including Streets and Traffic Bylaws, and Parks Regulation Bylaws
  • Working knowledge of Provincial Statutes - including the Safe Streets Act
  • Working knowledge of social service support agencies (provincial, regional, local) and services they provide

A: The term of this temporary position is unknown. The position is currently held by an individual who is expected to resume command upon their return to work.

A: The Union has been consulted regarding this unique posting and supports the decision to post and fill with a confirmed Sergeant.


Q: Why is the position being posted rather than utilizing Acting Sergeants from the team?

A: There are a number of factors that have led to this decision to fill with a confirmed Sergeant, including the highly visible and political nature and mandate of the team, as well as the financial funding structure of the Unit.


Q: Will the CRU Sergeant position be decided before this Sergeant - Foot Patrol Team and Bylaw Support position?

A: Should an applicant apply for both positions, they will be advised of the outcome of the CRU Sergeant competition prior to interviews being conducted for the Sergeant - Foot Patrol Team and Bylaw Support position.
