Server Specialist

The Server Specialist is responsible for the administration, maintenance, monitoring, and support of the organization’s server infrastructure. This position helps ensure the availability, performance, reliability, and security of enterprise systems while providing technical support for server- and virtualization-related issues.

The Server Specialist also participates in information technology projects and provides subject matter expertise related to server management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade Windows and Linux servers.
  • Monitor server performance, availability, and capacity utilization.
  • Perform routine server maintenance, patching, and system updates.
  • Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and related services.
  • Troubleshoot server hardware, operating system, and application issues.
  • Administer and support virtualization environments, including VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Manage Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS), and backup systems.
  • Monitor storage capacity and performance and recommend upgrades as needed.
  • Implement and maintain security best practices for server infrastructure.
  • Manage server access controls and permissions.
  • Monitor and remediate vulnerabilities identified through security assessments.
  • Configure and manage backup solutions, including backup verification and restoration testing.
  • Help ensure critical systems can be restored within established recovery objectives.
  • Provide Tier II and Tier III technical support for server and infrastructure issues.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and emergency response activities as required.
  • Assist with planning and deploying new server infrastructure.
  • Evaluate and recommend hardware and software solutions.
  • Collaborate with network, security, and application teams on technology projects.
  • Maintain accurate system documentation and operating procedures.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience and relevant certifications.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience administering enterprise server environments.
  • Experience supporting Windows Server operating systems.
  • Knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware or Hyper-V.
  • Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • Valid driver's license.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Industry certifications such as:
  • Microsoft Certified: Windows Server
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • CompTIA Server+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Microsoft Azure Administrator
  • Healthcare or aviation industry experience.
  • Experience with PowerShell, scripting, and automation.


Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • This position primarily works in an indoor office environment and requires prolonged periods of sitting and extensive computer and keyboard use. The position requires frequent verbal and written communication with employees, management, and external parties.
  • The Server Specialist must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times, provide after-hours support as needed for critical issues, travel up to 20% of the time, work full-time 8-hour shifts, and work scheduled holidays when business needs require.
