Shift Team Leader
Job Purpose / Overview
The Shift Team Leader is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) site during their assigned shift.
This role leads a team of technicians, ensuring compliance with operational procedures, safety standards, and performance targets.
The Shift Team Leader acts as the first point of escalation on shift and plays a key role in maintaining asset availability, grid compliance and operational excellence.
Contextual Information
Operating Environment
This is a critical role within the site operational structure, ensuring that the site operates safely, reliably, and in alignment with commercial and grid requirements. The Shift Team Leader provides hands-on leadership and is instrumental in delivering operational excellence on a 24/7 basis.
The candidate must be willing to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays and have the ability to respond to emergency situations on-site.
This role reports to the Operations Manager.
Principal Accountabilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead and supervise shift personnel to ensure safe and efficient site operations
- Act as the responsible person in charge of the site during the assigned shift
- Coordinate real-time operation of the BESS in line with grid requirements and dispatch instructions
- Monitor system performance using SCADA and other control systems
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Through the setting to work process ensure the application of general safety requirements and the Safety Rules for self, Fidra Operations staff and contract staff.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all HSE policies
- Ensure all permit-to-work systems, isolations, and risk assessments are properly implemented
- Lead incident response and reporting, including initial investigations
Performance & Monitoring
- Ensure optimal performance and availability of BESS assets
- Work with the Performance Team and others to identify plant performance shortfalls and areas for continual improvement
- Identify and escalate technical faults or abnormal conditions
- Coordinate with maintenance teams to minimise downtime and optimise asset performance
People Management
- Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and support to shift team members
- Conduct shift briefings, handovers, and toolbox talks
- Support training and development of team members
- Contractor and contracts management as appropriately assigned
Stakeholder Coordination
- Liaise with the Operations Manager, engineering teams, and external stakeholders (e.g. grid operators)
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of operational data and incidents
- Support audits, inspections, and compliance activities
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to operational improvements and efficiency initiatives
- Support implementation of new processes, procedures, and technologies

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Knowledge & Skills
Essential
- Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a shift-based operational setting
- Strong understanding of electrical systems and safety procedures
- Experience with SCADA or control systems
- Ability to make decisions under pressure and manage incidents effectively
Desirable
- Knowledge of grid services and energy markets
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Relevant technical qualification (e.g. electrical engineering, HNC/HND or equivalent)
- Experience in power generation, energy storage, utilities, or similar industrial environment
- Authorised Person / Senior Authorised Person (AP/SAP) status
Desirable
- Experience working with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
