About the Role
Our client is looking for a hands-on M&E Site Engineer / Mechanical Engineer / Plumber to join their established team on a permanent basis.
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out mechanical engineering and plumbing works across commercial and retail fit-out projects, working primarily across the UK.
The role will involve hands-on technical work alongside supporting the Project Manager with site coordination, project delivery, quality control and technical issues.
The position would suit an experienced Mechanical Engineer or Plumber who is confident working independently, dealing with clients and project teams, and is interested in developing their career towards site management and project coordination.
An SMSTS qualification would be highly desirable, as the successful candidate will have the opportunity to take on additional site management responsibilities, although this is not essential.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Mechanical & Plumbing Installation: Carry out mechanical engineering and plumbing works across retail and commercial fit-out projects, ensuring installations are completed to specification, drawings and relevant industry standards.
- Site Coordination & Project Support: Work closely with the Project Manager to coordinate daily site activities, plan works, manage priorities and help ensure projects are delivered on programme.
- Quality Control & Technical Support: Inspect completed works, assist with testing and commissioning, identify and resolve technical issues, and ensure all mechanical and plumbing installations meet the required quality standards.
- Subcontractor & Stakeholder Liaison: Liaise professionally with subcontractors, suppliers, other trades, clients and project teams to coordinate works, resolve site issues and maintain effective communication throughout the project.
- Health & Safety & Site Documentation: Ensure all works are carried out safely and in accordance with relevant H&S requirements, RAMS and site procedures. Assist with inspections, snagging, reporting and maintaining accurate project documentation.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Engineer, Site Engineer, Plumber or similar
- Strong mechanical engineering and plumbing knowledge
- Hands-on experience within commercial environments
- Good understanding of Health & Safety and construction site requirements
- Ability to work independently and as part of a wider project team
- Confident dealing with clients, subcontractors and other trades
- Willingness to travel UK-wide
- Full UK driving licence preferred
- Reliable, technically strong and proactive approach to work
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- SMSTS - Highly desirable and would provide the opportunity to take on additional site management responsibilities
- F-Gas - Desirable but not essential
- Relevant mechanical, plumbing or construction qualifications
- Previous retail fit-out experience
- Experience working for major national retail clients
- Experience working across multiple UK-wide projects
- Previous experience supporting site management or project coordination
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on and technically capable Mechanical Engineer / Plumber who is comfortable working on live commercial and retail fit-out projects.
You will be reliable, organised and confident working independently, while also being able to communicate effectively with Project Managers, clients, subcontractors and other trades.
This role would particularly suit someone who wants to develop beyond purely hands-on engineering and take on additional site management and project coordination responsibilities over time.
Experience working on retail projects, particularly for major national clients such as Marks & Spencer, would be highly advantageous.
