Site Safety Officer | USACE on a USEPA Superfund Site
Corinth, VT | 6–8 Week Assignment (Potential for Extension)
Travelers are encouraged to apply! Eligible travelers will receive per diem.
Responsibilities
- Provide on-site safety oversight whenever work is in progress.
- Conduct daily site inspections and monitor weather and air quality.
- Identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and maintain safety documentation.
- Track deficiencies and complete daily and weekly safety reports.
- Attend project meetings and lead or support toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Maintain and update site-specific safety plans and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs).
- Ensure compliance with all project safety and health requirements for employees, subcontractors, and visitors.
- Conduct site orientations, safety training, and visitor briefings.
- Manage PPE inventory and verify proper PPE use.
- Oversee air monitoring, dust control, and exposure monitoring activities.
- Investigate incidents, perform root cause analyses, and recommend corrective actions.
- Verify equipment decontamination before removal from the site.
- Coordinate injury response and support employee return-to-work efforts.
Required Qualifications
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training.
- OSHA 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher (current within 1 year).
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Card (valid within the past 5 years).
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Minimum of 24 hours of documented safety and occupational health training within the past 5 years (OSHA 30 does not count toward this requirement).
- Minimum of 2 years implementing safety and health programs at hazardous waste sites.
- Fire safety experience (NFPA 241) preferred.
- Training in respiratory protection, PPE, air monitoring instruments, and air sampling methods.
- Five (5) or more years of construction/general industry safety experience OR four (4) years plus a professional safety certification (e.g., CSP) managing safety programs on environmental remediation projects of similar scope and complexity, including:
- Excavation and stockpiling of contaminated soil/materials.
- Perimeter air monitoring.
- Contaminated soil mixing and in-situ stabilization.
- Backfilling and site restoration.
Physical Requirements
This is an active field position requiring daily oversight of construction activities.
Candidates must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Climb ladders and work at elevated heights.
- Enter confined spaces when necessary.
- Work on uneven terrain and active construction sites.
- Lift up to 30 pounds.
- Work outdoors in changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
