Sitework Designer 2

Position Overview

BLOC Resources is seeking an experienced Sitework Designer 2 to support transmission and substation projects for our client, Southern Company.

Based out of the Energy Center in Birmingham, Alabama, this position is responsible for producing civil site and grading design drawings supporting transmission projects throughout Alabama and Mississippi. The Sitework Designer will work closely with engineers, designers, technicians, construction teams, vendors, and other project stakeholders to develop safe, accurate, constructible, and cost-effective civil designs for electrical substations.

The position requires strong hands-on experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, grading and drainage design, erosion control, stormwater management, survey data, and civil site development.

This role combines office, remote, and field work and requires the ability to independently manage multiple design assignments while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, schedule, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Civil & Site Design

  • Produce civil grading design drawings for transmission and electrical substation projects.
  • Develop layouts and conceptual designs in support of lead design engineers.
  • Perform civil site design assignments with limited supervision.
  • Develop grading, drainage, erosion control, and stormwater management designs.
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to produce accurate 2D and 3D civil design deliverables.
  • Process and incorporate survey information into design packages.
  • Create and work with surfaces, contours, grading models, and other site-development data.
  • Develop designs consistent with applicable engineering standards, project requirements, and construction needs.
  • Maintain a strong emphasis on producing accurate, mistake-free design packages.

Substation & Transmission Project Support

  • Support civil design activities associated with electrical substations and transmission projects.
  • Provide technical support and design direction to technicians and other project personnel.
  • Interface with other departments to ensure accurate project scoping.
  • Assist in developing best-practice civil designs.
  • Provide design and field support for Alabama Power and Mississippi Power transmission substation projects.
  • Support construction teams with questions and issues involving civil aspects of substation projects.
  • Participate in field visits to evaluate site conditions and support project execution.

Project Planning & Estimating

  • Assist with developing project and task scope definitions.
  • Provide input into project schedules and design timelines.
  • Prepare material takeoffs.
  • Assist with project cost estimates.
  • Evaluate project requirements and identify potential design or constructability concerns.
  • Support projects from conceptual design through construction as required.

Design Review & Quality

  • Review and evaluate work produced by other designers and drafters.
  • Verify drawings and design packages for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Identify potential design conflicts and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Apply strong attention to detail throughout the design process.
  • Support quality assurance and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Follow established design standards, procedures, and Human Performance concepts.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate with internal engineering and design groups.
  • Work with external clients, contractors, vendors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Communicate design requirements and technical information clearly.
  • Manage multiple projects and assignments simultaneously.
  • Prioritize work effectively to meet established schedules and project deliverables.
  • Provide timely updates regarding project status, design concerns, and technical issues.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical training in drafting, civil design, engineering technology, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Relevant technical certifications preferred.
  • Autodesk certification preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of civil site drafting and design experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Civil site design
    • Grading design
    • Drainage design
    • Erosion and sediment control
    • Hydrology
    • Stormwater management
  • Experience developing civil design drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience processing survey data and developing surfaces and contours.
  • Previous electrical substation, transmission, utility, or heavy infrastructure design experience is highly desirable.
  • Construction estimating and/or construction administration experience is a plus.

Work Location, Schedule & Travel

The position includes a combination of office, remote/telework, and field responsibilities. Office-related work may be performed remotely when appropriate, provided the employee can successfully work in a virtual environment and has reliable internet access.

Candidates must be willing and able to report to the office and/or project field locations on a routine or as-needed basis.

Approximately 25% travel may be required, including occasional overnight travel, primarily in support of transmission and substation projects in Alabama and Mississippi.
