Skate Guard

JOB SUMMARY: The Skate Guard is responsible for maintaining a safe and friendly environment during skating activities at the Centennial Recreation Complex. As the first point of contact for customers, the Skate Guard must be well-informed, able to communicate effectively, and friendly, while fostering an atmosphere of compliance with park district guidelines. This position requires excellent customer service skills, skating ability, and a positive attitude. The skate guard primarily reports to the Aquatics and Ice Supervisor and will be managed by the Building Lead on duty during most shifts. This is a PT 3 position, with the benefits listed below

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare the rink for public skate sessions (setting cones on the ice, playing music, checking rental skates)

  • Communicate facility expectations with patrons and promote safety during all skating activities including: public skate sessions, private rentals, birthday parties, and large figure skating/hockey events

  • Distribute and collect rental skates from patrons before and after parties and public skate sessions, wiping down skates and storing them properly, using the pre-arranged sorting system

  • Assist the Building Lead with room setup and take down as it relates to parties and special events

  • Actively contribute to the Park District's sustainability goals

  • Actively uphold and contribute to the Wilmette Park District Comprehensive and Strategic Plan, including the Guiding Principles and Strategic Priorities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned, based on agency needs

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively support the safety program that will effectively control and reduce accidents

  • Obey the practical safety rules, regulations, and procedures established by the Wilmette Park District safety program that is pertinent to the activities conducted by the department.

  • Become familiar with and adhere to the safety procedures of the Wilmette Park District, including but not limited to fire, severe weather, and evacuation protocols

  • Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices, or conditions observed to your immediate supervisor or the Human Resources/Risk Management division.

  • Attend and participate in required safety training

  • Report all accidents and incident reports that occur under the area of responsibility to the immediate supervisor.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 15 years of age.

  • Entry-level position

  • Temperatures below 40 degrees while on the ice

  • Frequently required to walk and skate

  • The noise level is moderate to high at times

  • Frequently required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • None

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Temperatures below 40 degrees while on the ice

  • Frequently required to walk and skate

  • The noise level is moderate to high at times

  • Frequently required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

HOURS:

  • Monthly availability must cover at least 50% of all available shifts

  • Summer shifts may include Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:30pm to 3:00pm, as well as Saturdays and Sundays during the same hours.

  • School year schedule changes may include Saturday and Sunday from 12:30pm to 3:00pm, along with occasional days off, rink special events, and school breaks.

PT3 employees working fewer than 600 hours receive the following benefits: individual skating membership; individual pool and beach membership; one beach parking decal; 25% off the resident rate for golf off peak limited play (employee and family); 25% off the resident rate for tennis membership (employee and family); individual fitness membership with 25% off the resident rate for family; 25% off the resident rate for recreational program classes, group lessons, ice private lesson rental, and facility rental (employee and family); and golf and tennis pro shop items at cost + 15%.
