MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Social Media & Digital Content Specialist ("Specialist") of the Montana State University Alumni Foundation (“Alumni Foundation”) is a key member of the Strategic Communications team, supporting all Alumni Foundation units through strategic social media management, digital storytelling, and multimedia content creation. This position is primarily responsible for managing the organization's social media presence, creating engaging content, fostering online communities, and driving audience growth and engagement.


The Specialist works collaboratively with writers, designers, photographers, videographers, and campus partners to create and distribute content that advances the Alumni Foundation's mission and strengthens relationships with alumni, donors, students, and friends of Montana State University. The Specialist reports directly to the Assistant Vice President of Content Strategy & Communications.


The position may require some evenings, weekend work, and occasional travel.


Breakdown of Duties:

  • 60% Social media management and content creation
  • 20% Video production and editing
  • 10% Photography and visual storytelling
  • 10% Communications and marketing support


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Manage and maintain the Alumni Foundation's presence across social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn), including content scheduling, publishing, monitoring, and engagement.
  2. Develop and execute social media content calendars aligned with organizational priorities, campaigns, events, and fundraising initiatives.
  3. Create compelling social media content including copy, graphics, photography, and video assets.
  4. Monitor social media channels and engage with audiences in a timely and professional manner.
  5. Track and report social media metrics and performance, providing recommendations to improve engagement, reach, and audience growth.
  6. Collaborate with Strategic Communications staff and campus partners to identify and develop stories that resonate with target audiences.
  7. Produce and edit short-form videos for social media platforms, websites, email campaigns, and digital marketing efforts.
  8. Capture and edit photography to support social media, marketing, events, publications, and donor relations initiatives.
  9. Manage and coordinate freelance photographers and videographers, when needed.
  10. Maintain an organized library of social media, photography, and video assets.
  11. Stay current on social media trends, emerging platforms, content formats, and best practices.
  12. Support livestreams, event coverage, and real-time storytelling during university and Alumni Foundation events.
  13. Ensure all content aligns with brand standards, messaging priorities, and accessibility guidelines.
  14. Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to support communications and marketing goals.
  15. Assist with communications, marketing, and special projects as assigned.
  16. Affect and maintain a professional, proactive, positive, highly collaborative, and performance-centric work environment.
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Content Strategy & Communications.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated understanding of major social media platforms and audience engagement strategies.
  2. Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to adapt content for different audiences and platforms.
  3. Ability to independently plan, create, schedule, and monitor social media content.
  4. Experience creating short-form video content for social media channels.
  5. Photography skills, including basic composition, lighting, and photo editing.
  6. Working knowledge of video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or equivalent.
  7. Familiarity with social media management and analytics tools.
  8. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  9. Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  10. Ability to work independently while exercising sound professional judgment.
  11. Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications preferred.
  12. Understanding of digital marketing and content strategy best practices.
  13. Willingness to learn new technologies, platforms, and communications tools.
  14. Passion for storytelling and creating engaging digital content.
  15. Ability to work some evenings, weekends, and travel occasionally.
