About the department

Our direct team is based in the USA. The team supports batch systems for FADB, our funds accounting database, and for GPW, the downstream system that reports product performance. The immediate team is currently three full-time employees.

A Software Developer builds, tests and ships solutions for the Business Data Solutions team at Franklin Templeton as a permanent employee. This is an individual contributor role.

You will deliver production-quality services and web applications built on Python (Django and FastAPI) and Oracle PL/SQL, work independently on well-defined problems, and use AI tools responsibly to improve speed and quality. Your work gives the business reliable features.

How you will add value

Core Responsibilities

• You will develop new code and configuration for complete features across a Django web application, Django REST and FastAPI REST APIs, Oracle PL/SQL and batch processes, and maintain automatable test cases.
• You will develop automated build and deployment methods using GitLab CI/CD pipelines, containers and AWS services such as Lambda, S3 and ECS Fargate.
• You will troubleshoot defects across browser, service, database and batch processes, proving the cause before changing code.

Strategic Responsibilities

• You will analyze requirements, propose high-level solutions, and document new code and configurations for complete features.
• You will contribute to shared libraries, reusable components, project plans and effort estimates.

Team & Collaboration

• You will review source code of more junior engineers, applying basic business domain knowledge.
• You will build effective working relationships with other technical teams, and explain technical choices clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues.
• You will support production batch processes for FADB and GPW, and document issue resolutions
  

What will help you be successful in this role

Experience, Education & Certifications

1-4 years of experience

• Uses AI assistants as a natural part of their development workflow: for writing code, debugging, writing tests, generating documentation, and exploring unfamiliar domains.
• Decomposes a task into parts, translates those parts into effective prompts, and iterates on those prompts until the task is complete.
• Treats AI-generated outputs as drafts, not final, and refines them before incorporating.
• Actively explores new AI tools, techniques, and capabilities.

4 + years of experience

• Approaches system design, architecture, or technical decisions, considering where AI can meaningfully improve the solution, not just the development process.
• Evaluates trade-offs between AI-assisted and traditional approaches with practical judgement.
• Identifies repetitive, manual, or error-prone processes in their team's work and introduces AI-powered improvements, including but not limited to code reviews, AI-assisted testing, intelligent alerting, or document generation.
• Applies advanced prompting techniques to tackle ambiguous, multi-step or domain specific problems.

Technical Environment

• Core stack: Python and Oracle PL/SQL, with a Django web application (using Django REST) and FastAPI REST APIs, both running on ECS Fargate.
• Operating environment: AWS cloud, with some workloads on Linux EC2 and some container-based (ECS Fargate).
• Workflow: Git and GitLab CI/CD, AWS Lambda workflows and S3, [ticketing and SDLC to add].
• Quality and reliability: unit and integration testing, code review, and production troubleshooting of applications and batch processes.

Technical Skills

• Python development, including Django web applications (with Django REST) and FastAPI REST APIs.
• Oracle: strong SQL and PL/SQL development.
• AWS: working knowledge of services such as Lambda, S3, EC2 and ECS Fargate.
• Testing: unit and integration testing, with exposure to test automation.
• Working knowledge of Git-based workflows, GitLab CI/CD and containerized deployment, and sound practice on authentication, authorization and API security.
• Demonstrated, hands-on experience building and supporting applications and batch processes in production.
• Clear written and verbal communication, effective teamwork, and a record of owning work through to completion.
• Experience with AWS Lambda, S3 or ECS Fargate, and with Linux on EC2 would be a plus.
• Practical experience applying LLMs or AI coding assistants, including evaluating the quality of their output would be a plus.
• Experience in financial services or other regulated environments would be a plus.
