Software Developer (Java & Typescript)
Summary
Back-end software developer on a defence/national-security digital transformation programme in London, building secure Java and TypeScript services, REST APIs and microservices (Express.js) within an Agile, DevSecOps-oriented team. Active SC clearance is mandatory.
In this role, you will deliver secure, scalable software for a critical digital transformation programme in the defence and national security sector. You join a multidisciplinary Agile team to design and maintain back-end services and APIs that operate within highly regulated environments. You will collaborate with architects, security stakeholders and product teams to ensure reliable, secure delivery that supports operational decision-making. This is a hands-on, impact-driven opportunity to shape secure software used in national defence programmes.
Responsibilities- Design, develop and maintain back-end services using Java and TypeScript
- Build and support RESTful APIs and microservices with Express.js
- Deliver secure, scalable, high-performing software for Defence and Government environments
- Work across full SDLC from requirements to live service support
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate operational requirements into technical solutions
- Produce clean, well-tested code aligned with engineering standards
- Contribute to solution architecture and design decisions
- Support CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices
- Troubleshoot complex issues across development, testing and production
- Participate in peer reviews, knowledge sharing and mentoring
- Ensure solutions meet security, compliance and accessibility requirements
- Operate within Agile delivery teams including planning, refinement, stand-ups and retrospectives
- Active SC Clearance (mandatory)
- Experience delivering software in Defence/Government or high-security environments
- Strong commercial experience with Java
- Strong experience with TypeScript and Express.js
- Experience building REST API and microservice architectures
- Strong secure software engineering practices
- Experience with version control, automated testing and code quality processes
- Experience in Agile delivery teams
- Familiarity with CI/CD and DevSecOps methodologies
