Software Developer
Salary: Competitive remuneration and benefits on offer!
The OpportunityThis is a rare chance to step into an established, in-house IT team at a genuinely long-standing and highly respected Nelson employer — and to do it at exactly the right moment. Nelson Pine is partway through a significant modernisation journey: a new cloud-based data platform, an evolving ERP environment, and an internally built application that's central to how the business runs. You won't be maintaining the status quo — you'll be helping shape what comes next.
This role currently sits with a contractor, however Nelson Pine now wants to bring this capability in-house, permanently — a strong signal of the company's investment in its systems, its people, and where it's heading.
If you want ownership, variety, and the chance to genuinely influence outcomes — rather than being one of many in a large corporate IT function — this is worth a serious look.
The Company
Nelson Pine Industries is a well-established, well-regarded name in the region, known for its stability and standing in the local market. The business is currently in a period of meaningful change and improvement — investing in modern technology, streamlining legacy systems, and building the foundations for future growth. Joining now means joining at the ground floor of that transformation, with a seat at the table as decisions are made.
The Role
As Software Developer, you'll take the lead on the company's internally built Single Page Application (SPA) — developing new features, ensuring performance and stability, and working closely with the IT Manager and business stakeholders to prioritise what gets built next. Alongside this, you'll play a key part in the data modernisation programme, building integration pipelines into a new cloud data platform and working alongside an outsourced data architecture partner to bring the agreed architecture to life.
You'll also have a hand in the wider technology transformation underway — from ERP data migration to the gradual retirement of legacy systems like MS Access and MS SQL Server. It's a small IT team, so you'll need to be comfortable wearing more than one hat, working independently, and genuinely contributing ideas rather than just executing tickets.
Key areas of focus:
- Lead ongoing development of the company's core internal SPA application
- Build and maintain data integration pipelines into a new cloud data platform
- Support ERP data migration as the modernisation programme progresses
- Maintain and transition legacy systems (MS Access, MS SQL Server) as needed
- Partner with an outsourced data architecture vendor to implement agreed designs
- Contribute technical input into a broader, business-wide modernisation programme
You're a hands-on developer with solid commercial experience, a pragmatic streak, and genuine curiosity about modern data and cloud technology. You're just as comfortable extending an existing codebase as you are proposing something better.
You'll bring:
- 3+ years' commercial software development experience
- Strong React.js and modern JavaScript/TypeScript skills
- Node.js or comparable server-side JavaScript/TypeScript experience
- Working SQL knowledge (MS SQL Server experience a bonus)
- Exposure to cloud platforms — AWS, Azure, or GCP
- An understanding of data integration patterns and ETL/ELT processes
- A pragmatic, quality-focused approach to maintaining and extending live systems
- Strong communication skills — able to translate technical detail for non-technical stakeholders
- Experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or operational business is a real advantage
- Comfort working independently and managing priorities within a small, close-knit team
- Full eligibility to work in NZ
