Software Developer
Summary
Full-stack software developer on UniPro Foodservice's internal IT team, building custom web apps, APIs, and integrations (API/file/EDI) for members, suppliers, and internal systems across the whole SDLC. Stack centers on PHP/Laravel, Vue.js, TailwindCSS, MySQL, and Linux/Nginx servers hosted in AWS. Atlanta hybrid, with fully remote considered.
SUMMARY
The Software Developer works across the full software development life cycle (SDLC) for UniPro’s custom applications, integrations, and digital platforms. This is a generalist role. The work spans user-facing features, backend services and APIs, and the data behind them, across Member- and Supplier-facing applications as well as internal systems. Priorities move with the project pipeline, so the role suits someone who can work at more than one layer of the stack and pick up unfamiliar technology as the work requires.
The developer partners with business stakeholders to turn requirements into working software, and shares responsibility with the rest of the development team for the quality, security, and supportability of what UniPro builds.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Application Development
- Design, build, and maintain features across the stack, from the user interface through application logic to the database.
- Build and maintain user-facing features using modern, component-based patterns, with attention to usability, accessibility, and responsive design.
- Build and maintain backend services, APIs, and scheduled processes that support UniPro applications.
- Optimize performance and reliability across the stack, including query efficiency, page load, and rendering.
Integrations & Data
- Develop and support integrations between UniPro applications, vendor platforms, and Member and Supplier systems, including API, file-based, and EDI exchanges.
- Work with application and reporting data, including writing and tuning SQL and supporting data-driven features in coordination with the data team.
Quality, Security & Delivery
- Write and maintain automated tests and participate in code reviews to keep quality consistent across the team.
- Follow secure development practices, including credential handling, dependency maintenance, and protection of Member and Supplier data.
- Use AI-assisted development tooling effectively and responsibly, holding generated code to the same review and testing standards as any other.
- Support production releases by following and improving established CI/CD and deployment processes for UniPro’s AWS-hosted Linux environments, and assist with troubleshooting as needed.
Stakeholders & Support
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements, clarify workflows, and refine acceptance criteria.
- Maintain and enhance existing applications, including inherited and legacy code, with an emphasis on reducing friction for the people who use them.
- Provide timely support for application issues by diagnosing problems, documenting findings, and proposing solutions or workarounds.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Contribute to documentation for application features, integrations, and support runbooks.
- Attend vendor meetings as needed to support evaluation of development tools, libraries, and services.
- Participate in training programs to increase professional knowledge and stay current with emerging application, integration, and data engineering practices.
- Assist in special projects as instructed by IT leadership.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION GIVEN AND RECEIVED
- Reports to the Manager, IT Development.
- No direct reports; works alongside the rest of the development team.
- Works independently with minimal supervision.
INTERNAL / EXTERNAL CONTACTS
- Internal contact with all employees.
- External contact with consultants, technology vendors, Members, Suppliers, and Managed Services providers.
JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- College degree or equivalent certifications required; equivalent experience will be considered.
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of progressive experience developing and supporting web or business applications.
- Demonstrated experience delivering production features and collaborating in a team-based SDLC process.
- Experience working at more than one layer of the stack, or clear evidence of moving into an unfamiliar area and becoming productive in it.
Technical Competencies
- Strong programming fundamentals in at least one modern language, along with HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript or TypeScript. Preference will be given to candidates with PHP/Laravel experience to support UniPro’s existing applications.
- Effective and responsible use of AI-assisted development tools is required.
- Experience with a modern component-based frontend framework. UniPro currently uses Vue.js and TailwindCSS.
- Experience building server-side applications and APIs. UniPro currently uses PHP/Laravel with MySQL.
- Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL, including reading and tuning queries.
- Working knowledge of API and integration patterns (REST/JSON), asynchronous processing, and error handling. Exposure to EDI or file-based exchange is a plus.
- Comfort working in Linux-based environments. UniPro applications run on Ubuntu servers behind Nginx; the role expects command-line familiarity and the ability to read logs and trace an issue to its source.
- Exposure to cloud hosting concepts and services. UniPro application infrastructure runs primarily in AWS; hands-on AWS experience is preferred, and depth here can be developed in the role.
- Working knowledge of Git and modern code review workflows; familiarity with GitHub is preferred.
- Exposure to and knowledge of automated testing practices and CI/CD concepts is preferred.
- Familiarity with the data and business platforms UniPro applications exchange data with, including Snowflake and D365 F&O, is a plus but not required.
Professional Competencies
- Proven ability to work in a dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail, usability, and quality, with a practical approach to problem-solving.
- Demonstrates initiative in improving how things work and proposing practical enhancements.
- Willingness to work outside a single specialty. The project pipeline determines the work, and this role is deliberately broad.
- Sound judgment about when to build, when to reuse what already exists, and when to ask for help.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Work outside of normal business hours may be required to support system issues, problems, or projects.
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 35 pounds.
- Occasional travel required (less than 10% of time).
- Based in Atlanta, GA on a hybrid schedule. A fully remote arrangement will be considered for the right candidate.
