Summary
Designs and builds secure, production-grade Python applications at x-RD — from sensor/data processing pipelines and automation to backend services and AI platforms — for Defence, National Security and Government clients. Day to day: owning features from concept to deployment, writing well-tested code, and collaborating with Commonwealth clients. Australian citizenship and NV2 clearance required.
About the Role
x-RD is an award-winning Australian technology company specialising in secure applications, systems integration, and AI platforms for Defence, National Security, and Government clients. As leaders in DevSecOps and secure AI development, we partner with industry leaders like AWS, GitLab, and Chainguard to deliver high-impact software.
We are seeking an experienced Software Developer to design and build production-grade Python applications, ranging from sensor and data processing pipelines to AI platforms and backend services.
Working under general direction, you will own assigned features from concept to deployment, collaborate closely with product owners and Commonwealth clients, and help maintain high engineering standards across our development team.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Deliver: Build secure, performant, and maintainable Python software across data pipelines, automation, and backend architectures.
Maintain Quality: Write well-tested code using robust automated test coverage (unit, integration, and system levels) to reduce technical debt.
Feature Ownership: Drive assigned features to completion against project milestones, managing risks and proactively resolving blockers.
Collaborate & Consult: Represent x-RD professionally when embedded with, or delivering to, Commonwealth clients, partners and other contractors, upholding the company's values and standards of conduct
Continuous Improvement: Contribute to design decisions, and document functional procedures.
Key Requirements & Qualifications
Python Expertise: 3+ years of professional experience writing production-grade Python.
Engineering Fundamentals: Strong grasp of data structures, version control (Git flow), automated testing (e.g., pytest), and CI/CD pipelines. Experience developing code with code management platforms such as GitLab, GitHub or the Atlassian suite, using Gitflow or similar branching strategy.
Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications, and/or equivalent professional experience, in software engineering, computer science or information technology.
Stakeholder Engagement: Confidence liaising with both technical and non-technical clients across Government, academic, or commercial sectors.
Security Clearance Requirement: Australian Citizenship is mandatory, with the ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance (NV2 or above).
Highly Desirable
Containers and orchestration tools (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes).
Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi).
Exposure to DevSecOps, sensor/data processing pipelines, AI/ML platforms, or cybersecurity.
Experience working within Defence, National Security, or ISR environments
