Brief Introduction to the team :
The Ordering Team owns the core order orchestration platform for Expedia Group, powering every booking transaction across its brands. The team manages the complete order lifecycle—create, change, and cancel—while integrating with critical downstream systems such as lodging, fraud, and payments.
Operating Tier 0/Tier 1 services, the team builds highly scalable, microservices-based platform capabilities with strict availability and reliability standards. Current initiatives include automating payment installment scheduling for Vrbo and transitioning manual processes into robust, reusable platform solutions.
In this role, you will:
- Design, build, and evolve backend services in Java for core lodging reservations booking, with a focus on reliability, scalability, and performance in a high-revenue, business-critical domain.
- Lead migration of functionality from legacy monolithic systems and stored procedures into well-structured, Spring Boot–based microservices, including supporting API design, low-level design, and data modeling.
- Apply software design principles, data structures and/or design patterns, and computer science fundamentals to write clean, maintainable, optimized, and modular code with good naming conventions
- Take end-to-end ownership of service components in production, including implementation, deployment, monitoring, and incident resolution using cloud platforms and observability tools such as Datadog and Splunk.
- Analyze and improve interactions with RDBMS-backed data stores, refactoring database logic away from stored procedures into robust service layers while maintaining correctness and system integrity.
- Collaborate with engineers across levels to drive technical decisions, code quality, and best practices in backend engineering, ensuring solutions remain maintainable and extensible across adjacent domains.
- Coordinate cross-team solutions, welcoming varied perspectives, to develop solutions to issues
- Drive platform engineering features and be an enthusiast for a DevOps environment across the organization in the pursuit to be operationally better every day
- Articulate technical design decisions and software implementation in technical forums
- Participate in code evolution and coding standard methodologies via code reviews
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled tools and solutions in the development lifecycle and production workflows to improve engineering velocity, quality, and operational outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.
- Candidate should have moderate experience mentoring Junior developers.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 6+ years of professional software development experience with a strong focus on backend engineering using Java in production environments.
- Hands-on experience designing and implementing backend services, including system design (with low-level design), API contracts, and data modeling for RDBMS-backed applications.
- Practical exposure to at least one major cloud platform (preferably AWS) and associated services for deploying, running, and monitoring backend services at scale.
- Demonstrated responsibility for owning and supporting backend components in production, including working with monitoring, logging, and alerting systems such as Datadog or Splunk.
- Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products in the context of backend service development, testing, or operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Deep expertise in Java-based microservice development using frameworks such as Spring Boot, including experience modernizing legacy or monolithic systems into service-oriented architectures.
- Strong RDBMS experience that goes beyond basic CRUD usage, including working with stored procedures, performance tuning, and systematically migrating database-resident logic into application services.
- Experience building and operating large-scale, business-critical backend systems in a cloud environment (such as AWS), with a track record of using observability tooling to drive operational excellence and reliability.
- Demonstrated use of AI-augmented development or operations (for example, code-generation assistants, intelligent alerting, or anomaly detection) and the ability to safely integrate AI/ML‑enabled solutions into backend services to improve developer productivity, system stability, or customer outcomes.
