Software Development Manager
At Garuda Robotics we solve real-world dull, dirty and dangerous problems using the latest drone technology. We lead the way in designing, prototyping, testing and manufacturing cutting-edge 5G-Native Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) — not just the aircraft but also the full stack of technology required for command and control.
About the Role
Our Design & Engineering Team is at the forefront of our company's product development. As a Software Development Manager, you will lead the engineers who build the live, mission critical software that flies our drones, streams and visualises their data, and delivers key services to the drone industry — while remaining hands-on in the codebase yourself.
You will own delivery across the full software development lifecycle for a squad of full stack engineers: shaping technical plans with product and project stakeholders, breaking features into parallel workstreams, unblocking your team daily, and holding the quality bar on every release that reaches a customer. Because our software controls aircraft in flight, reliability and safety are not negotiable — you will be the person who makes sure that shows up in how we design, review and test.
You will report to the VP, Engineering, who owns overall software strategy and architecture. Within that direction you have real autonomy over how your team designs, builds and ships: web and mobile front ends with geospatial, 3D and real-time video, and the back-end applications and infrastructure behind them (Node.js, RabbitMQ, Linux servers, video streaming servers, NoSQL databases) running in a hybrid cloud environment that blends on-premise infrastructure with AWS and Mobile Edge Compute.
This is a role for an engineer who wants to multiply a team's output rather than leave the code behind. Expect to spend real time in code review, prototyping the hard integrations, and debugging the problems nobody else can reproduce.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of full stack engineers, owning sprint planning, estimation and delivery commitments
- Translate product and project requirements into technical plans, sequencing work across frontend, backend and infrastructure
- Stay hands-on: review code, make design decisions within the agreed architecture, and build the critical or high-risk parts yourself
- Design and guide the development of performant, maintainable and reliable microservices and reusable back-end applications
- Uphold UI/UX quality alongside Design, ensuring interfaces are intuitive, clear and consistent for operators in the field
- Own release engineering end to end — versioning, staged rollouts, deployment to hybrid cloud and on-premise environments, and post-release monitoring
- Drive engineering quality through code review standards, automated testing, and system reliability and observability work
- Maintain and improve the CI/CD pipeline and developer tooling, and uphold our ISO 27001 controls and secure information flow in day-to-day practice
- Act as first responder for production and field incidents, driving root-cause analysis and follow-through on fixes
- Run one-on-ones, performance conversations and growth plans; interview, onboard and level up engineers on the team
- Support customer, partner and project office conversations on technical scope, feasibility and timelines
What You'll Gain
- Leading delivery of live, mission critical software for unmanned aircraft operations at national scale
- Designing and running applications in a hybrid cloud environment, blending on-premise infrastructure with AWS, Mobile Edge Compute and other major cloud providers
- UX technologies including web, mobile, mapping and geospatial, 3D, and real-time video streaming with AI video analytics
- Full stack architecture using Node.js, NoSQL databases (MongoDB, CouchDB) and an enterprise message bus (RabbitMQ)
- DevOps and cybersecurity, through hands-on work on our CI/CD pipeline and within our ISO 27001 controls environment
- Direct mentorship from the Head of Software Engineering, with a clear path toward broader technical leadership
- 5G-Native UAS and the command and control stack that sits behind the aircraft
- Live applications for facilities management, aerial surveillance and agriculture use cases
- Working directly with hardware, avionics and flight operations teams on integrated systems
Requirements
- At least 8 years of software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and operating production software
- At least 2 years leading or managing a team of engineers, including planning, code review and technical decision-making
- Hands-on full stack depth across frontend and backend; experience with any of the technologies above is a plus
- Solid grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: APIs, messaging, data modelling, and how services fail
- Demonstrated ownership of a release process and of system reliability in production
- Excellent teamwork and the ability to work with engineers of different disciplines
- Clear, direct communication with engineers, project managers, designers and customers
- Positive attitude and willingness to explore new technologies
- Genuine interest in developing people — you measure success by what your team ships and how it grows
Nice to Have
- Experience with real-time systems, telemetry, video streaming or geospatial applications
- Exposure to robotics, UAV/UAS, aviation or another safety-critical domain
- Experience with ISO 27001, security controls or regulated environments
- Experience scaling an engineering team through rapid product growth
