Software Development Manager, Ring Video Platform
Summary
Leads a Ring (Amazon) video platform team in London/Cambridge that builds and operates cloud services streaming, recording and processing video from millions of Ring cameras. Day to day: set technical direction, drive architecture and reliability deep dives, hire and coach engineers, and integrate AI into the team's development lifecycle.
We're looking for a technically deep Software Development Manager to lead one of our video platform teams. This role suits someone who enjoys the engineering as much as the people side. You'll stay close to the architecture, be comfortable reasoning about protocols, performance and failure modes, and be someone your engineers trust as a technical voice in the room. There's real room to innovate: real-time video at this scale raises hard problems, and many of them have no off-the-shelf answer.
We're also changing how we build software. AI is becoming part of every stage of our development lifecycle, from design and coding through review, testing and operations. You'll help shape what that looks like in practice. That means working out where AI genuinely makes engineers more effective, building it into the team's daily workflow, and using it to raise the quality bar as well as the pace.
Key job responsibilities
- Set the technical direction for your team's charter and own its roadmap, balancing new customer experiences with long-term platform health.
- Lead deep dives into architecture, performance and reliability, and make and explain design trade-offs.
- Look for opportunities to innovate: prototype new approaches, challenge assumptions, and turn promising ideas into production systems.
- Shape how your team uses AI across the software lifecycle, focusing on outcomes rather than tools for their own sake.
- Hire, coach and develop software engineers. Build a culture of ownership, curiosity and high standards.
- Work across device, cloud and app teams to deliver launches that span the organization.
- Communicate clearly with senior leadership through written narratives, well-chosen metrics and data-driven decisions.
About the team
The Ring Video Platform organization, based in Cambridge/London, builds and operates the cloud services that power Ring video, from the moment a camera starts streaming to when a customer watches it on their phone. We're a collaborative group of teams with deep expertise in video streaming and distributed systems. We invest heavily in how we build, including how we use AI to do it, and we care about spreading that expertise across the organization.
