Software Development Manager

Job Summary:

In this role, you will build and lead a modern software development practice, leveraging AI-assisted development (“vibe coding”), automation, modern architecture, and cloud-ready technologies to accelerate software delivery. You will be responsible for architecting scalable internal platforms, developing automated data pipelines, modernizing legacy databases and applications, and establishing robust CI/CD practices to support high-speed retail operations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Build & Lead a Modern Software Engineering Team

• Build, mentor, and lead an in-house software development team focused on modern engineering practices and AI-assisted development.

• Establish coding standards, AI-assisted development guidelines, code review practices, testing standards, and security controls.

• Drive the adoption of AI coding assistants and automated development tools to improve development productivity and delivery speed.

• Develop team capabilities through coaching, knowledge sharing, and continuous technical improvement.

2. Solution Architecture & Legacy Modernization

• Design scalable, modular, secure, and maintainable software architectures aligned with business and technology requirements.

• Modernize legacy applications and business logic into secure and scalable solutions.

• Develop and manage RESTful APIs and system integrations across enterprise platforms such as POS, WMS, ERP, and CRM.

• Establish secure coding practices, role-based access control (RBAC), API governance, and integration standards.

• Lead technology decisions relating to application architecture, frameworks, platforms, and development tools.

3. Data Pipelines & Enterprise Integration

• Design, build, and maintain automated data and integration workflows using n8n and other modern orchestration or ETL platforms.

• Develop event-driven workflows, scheduled synchronization, API integrations, webhooks, and Change Data Capture (CDC) processes where appropriate.

• Integrate data from stores, distribution centres, inventory systems, and enterprise applications into centralized data platforms.

• Enable automated data feeds for Microsoft Power BI and other analytics platforms.

• Implement resilient error handling, automated retries, monitoring, and alerting mechanisms for critical integration workflows.

4. DevOps, CI/CD & Database Modernization

• Establish standardized CI/CD pipelines to automate testing, build processes, and application deployments across development, staging, and production environments.

• Implement Git-based branching, source control, automated testing, and deployment practices.

• Drive containerization using Docker and modern deployment practices.

• Lead database modernization initiatives, including schema design, query optimization, data cleansing, migration, backup, replication, and performance tuning.

• Support cloud readiness and migration initiatives across AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

5. Project Governance & Business Alignment

• Partner with the GM of IT, Project Managers, Business Analysts, and business stakeholders to assess technical feasibility, delivery timelines, risks, and resource requirements.

• Translate business requirements from Store Operations, Distribution Centres, Commercial, and other functions into technical solutions and actionable development tasks.

• Provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle and ensure solutions meet business, security, performance, and scalability requirements.

• Lead root-cause analysis and resolution of critical software defects and technical issues.

• Identify and manage technical debt while balancing long-term architecture with business delivery requirements.

Skillset & Technologies:

Modern Development & AI-Assisted Engineering

• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, OpenAI API, Windsurf, or v0.

• Experience with AI-assisted code generation, rapid prototyping, prompt engineering, automated refactoring, testing, and AI-assisted code security review.

Full-Stack Development

• Backend: Node.js/TypeScript, Python (FastAPI/Django), Go, or modern PHP frameworks such as Laravel/Symfony.

• Frontend: React, Next.js, Vue.js, Tailwind CSS, or comparable modern frameworks.

• API architecture: RESTful APIs, Webhooks, GraphQL, Microservices, and Message Queues.

Data Pipelines & Automation

• Experience with n8n, Zapier, Make, Airflow, or similar workflow orchestration/ETL platforms.

• Knowledge of event-driven workflows, scheduled data synchronization, CDC, and API connectors.

• Experience integrating enterprise data with Microsoft Power BI or modern data warehouse environments.

Database & Legacy Modernization

• Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, or comparable modern databases.

• Strong knowledge of database architecture, schema design, indexing, query optimization, data migration, backup, and replication.

DevOps, Cloud & CI/CD

• Strong understanding of Git, GitHub/GitLab branching workflows, and source control practices.

• Experience with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, automated testing, and deployment pipelines.

• Experience with Docker, Nginx/Traefik, and containerized application deployment.

• Understanding of Infrastructure as Code and cloud migration fundamentals across AWS, Azure, or GCP.

Retail Technology – Preferred

• Familiarity with Point-of-Sale (POS), Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), SAP/ERP, inventory management, retail transaction flows, and member/loyalty systems.

• Retail, FMCG, grocery, supply chain, distribution centre, or multi-site operational experience will be a strong advantage.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline. Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.

• Minimum 6 years of hands-on software development experience.

• At least 2–3 years of experience in a technical leadership, Lead Developer, Technical Lead, or Engineering Manager role.

• Proven experience in architecting, developing, and deploying software solutions into production environments.

• Experience in legacy system modernization, application migration, or system integration is an advantage.

• Strong hands-on experience in software development, architecture, databases, APIs, automation, and DevOps.

• Experience using AI-assisted development tools as part of day-to-day software development is highly preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to build automated data workflows and manage high-volume transactional databases.
