Software Engineer (AI-Native)

Summary

The Software Engineer will design, develop, and maintain business applications for MGM Bulk's operations, safety, and finance teams. The role involves full-stack development using Python (Django) and TypeScript (React), system integration, and data quality assurance.

MGM Bulk Pty Ltd (MGM) is a privately owned company and a trusted name in the bulk haulage industry. Our outstanding reputation and unwavering commitment to excellence and safety make us a secure and stable choice for your long-term employment. With over 750 employees, we offer safe and cost-effective services from our branches across Western Australia, including bulk haulage, storage, ship loading, and stockpile management.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Design, develop, maintain and support MGM Bulk's business applications and system integrations to provide Operations, Safety and Finance teams with reliable and accurate information.

The position ensures that features are delivered to specification, that reported figures are verified before release and that changes are assessed for wider impact before release to production.

This role focuses on enabling Operations, Safety and Finance teams to rely on the applications through sound development practice, thorough testing and collaboration with vendors and the wider Technology team.

Key Result Areas

APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT

Develop and maintain MGM Bulk's business applications to support accurate and efficient operations.

This will be achieved by:

  • Translating business requirements into clear technical specifications before development begins.

  • Designing, developing and testing features and fixes across the application stack.

  • Reusing existing services and data definitions rather than duplicating them.

  • Providing second-level application support, including issue diagnosis and resolution.

  • Delivering each change in full, including code, tests, documentation and deployment.

DATA ACCURACY AND QUALITY ASSURANCE

Ensure that reports and figures produced by the applications are correct and that changes are released without regression.

This will be achieved by:

  • Verifying calculated figures against production data using independent checks before release.

  • Using the established source of truth for each metric.

  • Assessing the wider effect of each change, including which areas depend on the component being changed and whether a request from one part of the business applies more broadly.

  • Applying controls such as feature switches, allow lists and dry-run modes to new or high-impact functionality.

  • Investigating discrepancies reported by users and resolving the underlying cause.

SYSTEM INTEGRATION AND PRODUCTION OPERATIONS

Maintain reliable operation of the applications and their connections to core business systems.

This will be achieved by:

  • Supporting and extending integrations with core business systems, in collaboration with the Data & Integration Engineer and vendors.

  • Ensuring that any data written to an external system is controlled, audited and approved.

  • Deploying releases to the production environment using the standard release procedure, including database migrations and service restarts.

  • Diagnosing and resolving production issues using logs, database queries and monitoring data.

  • Maintaining data protection, access control and audit logging standards.

DOCUMENTATION, USER ENGAGEMENT AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Keep technical knowledge current and support system adoption across business units.

This will be achieved by:

  • Maintaining technical documentation, coding standards and operating procedures.

  • Managing the user feedback and request queue and communicating outcomes to users.

  • Assisting end users with guidance on new or updated features.

  • Recording lessons from incidents and user feedback in documentation and automated tests.

  • Evaluating and recommending improvements to development tools and practices.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ATTRIBUTES

Essential

  • Tertiary qualification in computer science, software engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Ability to translate business requirements into clear, testable specifications.

  • Experience with Linux-based deployment and operations, including web servers, task queues, database migrations and version control.

  • Understanding of system integration patterns, including REST APIs, streaming data, OAuth and webhooks.

  • Clear communication and collaboration skills across technical and business teams.

Desirable

  • Experience in transport, mining or logistics operations.

  • Experience as the lead or sole engineer responsible for a production system.

  • Experience in data reconciliation across multiple systems, including identity matching and data quality.

  • Experience with Flutter, Microsoft Azure or PostgreSQL.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • Methodical and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills.

  • Verifies results before relying on them and does not act on unconfirmed assumptions.

  • Considers the wider impact of a change before acting.

  • Proactive and self-motivated, takes ownership of outcomes.

  • Collaborative, working effectively with vendors, peers and users.

  • Calm under pressure and able to manage multiple priorities.
