Software Engineer
NewBe an early applicantFleet Space builds software for customers and internal teams working with geophysical surveys, geological data, interactive 3D visualisation and machine learning predictions. Our platform lets users explore survey results, interpret complex datasets, upload project data, access deliverables and interact with predictive models.
We are looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer who enjoys working across the stack and turning ideas, data and models into useful products quickly. You will work on a diverse range of projects: dashboards, APIs, data processing, 2D and 3D visualisation, backend services, frontend applications and machine learning integration.
This role suits someone comfortable moving between front and back end, learning quickly, and using modern AI assisted development tools to accelerate implementation without losing engineering judgement.
What you'll do
- Design and build new products and features across Fleet's customer and internal software platform.
- Develop backend services, APIs, data processing workflows and frontend applications.
- Build interactive dashboards and tools for exploring complex scientific and operational data.
- Develop rich 2D and 3D visualisations for geophysical, geological, geospatial and machine learning datasets.
- Integrate machine learning models and their outputs into production applications and user workflows.
- Bring previously independent tools and workflows together into a cohesive platform.
- Build the interfaces customers use to upload data, manage projects and access their results.
- Work with large scientific and geospatial datasets, and find effective ways to process, transfer and visualise them.
- Maintain, improve and simplify existing systems, and look for ways to lift performance, usability and development velocity.
- Work closely with data scientists, machine learning engineers and geoscientists to turn experimental workflows into reliable software.
- Prototype new ideas quickly and work out the right path from prototype to production.
- Contribute to technical design decisions around application structure, APIs and integration with shared platform services.
- Around 4+ years in software engineering, working across the stack rather than in one narrow specialisation.
- Tech stack: Python, Go, TypeScript/JavaScript, SQL, AWS, Docker, GitLab and CI/CD, with 2D and 3D visualisation libraries such as Three.js, WebGL, deck.gl or Plotly.
- Backend and API experience from first principles: you can design a service and its data model, then integrate it cleanly with what already exists.
- Strong experience with SQL databases and structured data, and with data processing, data engineering or data science workflows.
- Experience building web applications, dashboards or interactive data tools.
- Ability to understand existing systems quickly and work effectively across unfamiliar parts of a stack.
- Pragmatic technical judgement, balancing development speed, complexity, maintainability and user value.
- Strong use of AI assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Codex or GitHub Copilot, with the ability to review, test and improve what they produce rather than accepting it as is.
- Comfort using AI aggressively for prototyping and well contained features, while recognising when architecture, data or security decisions need deeper engineering thought.
- Experience with Jira or similar project and issue tracking tools.
- Experience integrating machine learning models or data science workflows into production software.
- Knowledge or experience in geology, geospatial data, mining or scientific computing.
We want engineers who see AI assisted development as an important part of modern software engineering. We encourage rapid experimentation and AI assisted implementation, particularly for interfaces, prototypes and well contained features. At the same time, we expect engineers to understand the systems they build and take ownership of architecture, data models, APIs, testing, security and maintainability.
We value simplicity over unnecessary complexity, and we expect engineers to ask not only how we build something, but what is the simplest thing we can build that solves the problem well. The goal is to use modern tools to move quickly while continuing to build software we understand, trust and can maintain.
About Fleet Space
Fleet Space Technologies’ vision from the beginning was to build technologies to help humanity explore and connect the Earth, Moon, and Mars.
This led us to develop and launch one of Australia’s largest constellation of satellites, create our satellite-enabled mineral exploration technology (ExoSphere), and send Australia’s first seismic technology (SPIDER) to the Moon in 2026. ExoSphere, our end-to-end mineral exploration solution powered by space and AI, aims to accelerate critical mineral discovery needed for the clean energy technologies foundational to humanity’s future.
As part of Fleet’s founding vision, we also apply our technology to innovative solutions for defense and space exploration, including an upcoming mission to the Moon. Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, Fleet has a growing team in the USA, Canada, and beyond.
Company Culture
As a company, we are revolutionising the exploration of new worlds with advanced space technology to build a more prosperous future for humanity.
