Software Engineer II, Borglet
Summary
Software Engineer on Google's Borglet team, building the on-machine agent of Google's cluster management system. Day to day: writing and reviewing systems code, debugging hardware/network/service issues, and building infrastructure to measure performance at scale, with a focus on guest/host virtualization and languages like C, C++, Rust, Python or Go.
As a part of this role, you will work on Borglet, an on-machine agent, part of Google's Cluster Management System, and one of the most impactful software at Google, affecting all company's workloads.
As a part of the Borglet team, you will run a small team of 2-3 person executing on various projects in all major areas of infrastructure, and each team is run independently and given a large amount of freedom, while still counting on the support of the rest of the team when necessary. Projects typically last from 6-12 months meaning you're not locked into one area for too long, but have the flexibility to move around as desired.

- Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.
- Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
- Write product or system development code, review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
- Demonstrate expertise in understanding guest (virtualized) and host (hypervisor) environments and come up with secure solutions that connect both, work with peers to identify, design, create and optimize software features that run on top of Google's hardware stack.
- Develop, test, integrate, and release solutions, design and build infrastructure to automatically measure and detect regressions in key performance metrics at scale.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 1 year of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
- 1 year of experience with data structures and algorithms.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- 1 year of experience with software development.
- 1 year of experience with unmanaged language (Rust, C, C++).
- 1 year of experience with Python or Go.
- 1 year of experience with concurrency, multithreading and synchronization.
