Software Engineer II
Summary
Software Engineer II at Helix, a genomics/health-tech company, based in Mexico City with hybrid or remote (80+ km outside CDMX) options. You spend much of the day directing AI coding agents that plan, write, and test code, contributing across the full development lifecycle on lab systems or AI-native internal tools using Go/Python/Java/TypeScript, APIs, databases, and AWS.
Who We Are & What We Do
Your Career Path & Development
- AI-Native Engineering: Most of your day is spent directing agents that plan, write, and test code, so you can focus your judgment on architecture, review, and the calls only a human should make.
- Continuous Learning: Sharpen your skills with full access to the entire Udemy learning database.
- Internal Mentorship: Learn from experts across our global team through tech demos, pair programming, and collaborative projects.
- Clear Advancement: We provide a framework for you to grow from one role to the next, with clear expectations and support from your manager.
- Travel: Opportunities to travel to the US for collaboration with our global teams.
What is special about these roles?
- Lab Systems (LABS) - Lab Systems (LABS) — Owns the laboratory-facing services that keeps Helix’s sequencing & supply chain operations running. You’ll build and maintain scalable platforms and fullstack software that support the lab and integrates with analysis pipelines: lab workflows, instrument automations, sample accessioning, inventory management and distribution.
- Enterprise Tools / AI Swarm - Builds AI-native internal tooling that gives every Helix team superpowers. You’ll own internal projects end-to-end: taking stakeholder requirements, deciding on the technical approach, and building working solutions using AI-assisted development, with senior engineer review before anything ships.
As a Software Engineer II, you will:
- Contribute to projects across the full development lifecycle - building features, fixing bugs, and helping ship reliable solutions that have real impact on users.
- Work with AI agents as a default part of how you ship. Scope tasks clearly enough for an agent to execute independently, review and correct its output with the same rigor you'd apply to a teammate's PR, and know when a task needs a human driving instead.
- Write well-tested, readable code, participate in code reviews, and engage with feedback as a way to grow.
- Collaborate with your team, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to understand requirements and build solutions that work in practice.
- Develop familiarity with Helix’s products, codebase, and cloud infrastructure, steadily taking on more independent ownership as you grow.
- Surface problems and questions proactively - you don’t wait to be told something is wrong.
About you:
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Proficiency in at least one backend language (Go, Python, Java, or similar) — for Enterprise Tools roles, experience with TypeScript or scripting languages is also relevant.
- Comfortable connecting APIs and working with databases.
- Familiarity with cloud basics (AWS or similar) - you don’t need to be an expert, but you shouldn’t be starting from zero.
- Hands-on experience directing AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot) as part of your regular workflow, including reviewing and correcting their output.
- Solid fundamentals: you write readable code, test your work, and ask good questions.
- Self-directed and proactive - you move work forward and surface blockers early.
- Adaptable and curious - willing to learn a new domain (lab operations, genomics, or internal tooling) and pick up unfamiliar technologies.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
Pluses:
- Experience building internal tools or enterprise integrations (e.g., Google Workspace, Slack, or AWS APIs).
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or similar operational software.
- Familiarity with regulated software systems (e.g., HIPAA, ISO, FDA).
- Experience with AWS technologies and serverless infrastructure.
- Exposure to a startup or scale-up environment.
