Software Engineer IV - Embedded Systems

Frontgrade Technologies is seeking an Embedded Systems Software Engineer IV to lead the development and integration of software for advanced mission-processing systems used in space and military applications. These rugged, high-reliability systems integrate processing, I/O, power, storage, networking, FPGA, and other specialized modules.

This is a principal, hands-on individual-contributor role spanning embedded Linux, boot software, board support packages, device drivers, microcontroller firmware, FPGA logic, hardware interfaces, and application-level software. The engineer possesses extensive knowledge within a specialty area and across related software, firmware, FPGA, and hardware disciplines. This individual provides technical leadership and applies new processes, tools, and skills to improve the organization’s capabilities.

  • Architect, develop, integrate, and maintain embedded software for mission-processing systems.
  • Lead embedded Linux, bootloader, BSP, device-driver, and board bring-up activities.
  • Architect and develop microcontroller firmware for power control, sequencing, monitoring, communications, fault management, and board management.
  • Define interfaces among processors, FPGAs, microcontrollers, storage devices, networks, and custom peripherals.
  • Lead the resolution of complex issues spanning applications, operating systems, drivers, firmware, FPGA logic, and hardware.
  • Provide technical leadership for requirements, architecture, trade studies, reviews, verification, documentation, and releases.
  • Improve engineering practices while collaborating across disciplines and mentoring other engineers.

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in a specialized functional discipline. OR (12) years of experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelors Degree. OR (6) years of experience may be considered w/ a Masters Degree. OR (3) years of experience may be considered w/ a PhD.
  • Extensive embedded-software development experience for complex hardware platforms, including advanced C and C++ proficiency.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded Linux, BSPs, bootloaders, device drivers, kernel integration, and board bring-up.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded interfaces and system-level debugging across software, firmware, programmable logic, and hardware.
  • Ability to lead architecture, implementation, integration, verification, configuration management, and controlled product releases.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and hardware designs, mentor engineers, and communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience using JTAG debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Experience supporting products through architecture, development, integration, qualification, production introduction, and sustaining engineering.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Aerospace, defense, avionics, space, or other high-reliability product development.
  • ARM, Power Architecture, or RISC-V platforms; real-time operating systems; and bare-metal development.
  • AMD/Xilinx or Intel FPGA tools and embedded Linux environments such as Yocto, Buildroot, or PetaLinux.
