Software Engineer – Navigation Engineer (human)

Open 20d

Summary

Develops and integrates navigation software for mobile robots using ROS 2, third-party systems, and fleet interfaces to ensure reliable operation in real environments.

Your mission & challenges

We're looking for a Navigation Software Engineer to integrate, validate, and improve third-party and internal navigation solutions on our mobile robot platforms. You'll join our software department and work with third-party navigation, ROS 2, robot middleware, and fleet interfaces to make mobile robots navigate reliably in real customer environments.

  • You integrate and debug third-party navigation solutions into mobile robot and mobile manipulator platforms.

  • You develop and maintain a deep understanding of navigation software capabilities, configuration options, release updates, and known limitations; you collaborate with vendors by reporting issues, sharing feedback, and following up on bug fixes or feature improvements.

  • You develop software adapters between navigation systems, hardware interfaces, and fleet interfaces based on existing navigation systems.

  • You support navigation commissioning on real robots, including map creation, localization tuning, trajectory validation, and recovery behavior.

  • You analyze navigation failures using Docker logs, rosbag, RViz/Foxglove, and customer feedback.

  • You define standard commissioning and acceptance criteria for navigation performance, robustness, safety-related behavior, and navigation integration.

What we can look forward to

  • A degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in robotics, software engineering, or a related technical field is a plus.

  • Solid knowledge of navigation and localization (SLAM) techniques and ROS 2.

  • Experience with C++, Python, RESTful APIs, and Docker.

  • The ability to debug and isolate issues in complex software architectures, independently analyze root causes, and resolve problems with the right tools and methods.

  • Understanding of VDA5050, fleet management, or multi-robot traffic concepts is a plus.

  • Willingness to work with real robots, customer environments, and cross-functional teams.

  • Good English communication skills.
